Actually depending on the quality of the part (thermostat), a new thermostat can run up to about $15. Also the labor is much more than $25. There is a lot of work involved to even get to the point of removing the thermostat so labor charges should start around $65, and thats not including the dexcool coolant you have to buy because your old coolant must be drained to replace the thermostat.

I have been told that a 1999 Chevy Cavalier needs the harmonic balancer replaced. Is the repair worth the cost?

Hello Barbette,

The harmonic balancer is basically a counterweight attached to the front of the engines crankshaft. The balancer has a rubber cushion that could fail although I would suspect that would be a very rare occurrence.

I think it would be worth it, to get a second opinion on this diagnosis.

Not unless you plan on doing lots of modifications. The computers are different and the transmissions are different. It can be done like with all things cost is the factor.

How do I replace thermostat on 1999 chevy malibu

Follow the top radiator hose to the engine block, at the end of this hose is the thermostat housing. remove this housing , then remove the old thermostat. Install the new thermostat be careful not to over tighten bolts.
First make sure the car is cool. drain the coolant in a clean catch pan, you can reuse it if you keep it clean.

Does a thermostat on a 1999 chevy malibu twist in

No, it doesn't twist in. It's located in a housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose. If you are unsure of how to replace it, leave it to a professional.

How to change a heater core in a 1999 Chevy Malibu?

Before starting this job I would get a repair manual. This is not a easy job, 6+ hours for an experienced tech with all of the right tools. And you may have to discharge and recharge the AC system.
