Question about Dodge Intrepid
Check your battery cables and make sure they are both tight on the battery post. The alternator has nothing to do with your car starting, all the alternator does is keep your battery charged up when your car is running. When the alternator fails, the battery light could come on in your instrument cluster and your battery will eventually just run out of juice (go dead) If your battery cables are both tight, next thing to check is the starter cable, make sure it is tight. You will need to get underneath the car to verify this at the starter. If that cable is tight and your battery is good and all of your fuses are not burned out (fuse box located underneath the drivers side steering wheel) then you will need to replace the starter.

The alternator would be the issue if it weren't charging but this sounds more like a starter issue. If you can jump the vehicle it could be a matter of the battery not having enough amperage to crank the motor over. If you can't crank the motor over with a jump then again, I would look at the starter. Just as a make sure check, put a large socket on the Harmonic Balancer bolt head and make sure you can turn the motor by hand. If you can't you have much bigger problems than a bad starter or Alternator. If it were me I would remove the starter and have it tested at Auto Zone or Pep Boys.
