Need a diagnosis tool, reset codes from it--autozone can do this for free. sometimes the code will go away after X miles of driving. This is a OBDIII issue, again a Tech II or scan tool can erase the code.

The only way to reset the light is to use a Code reader or disconnect the negative Terminal on the battery. Normally if the Gas cap was the fault it should reset after a certain number of hours or restarts if it doesn't detect a fault. Take the vehicle to Auto Zone and have them read the codes with their machine. If it shows that code and you can sell the salesman on that fact you replaced the gas cap then sometimes they will reset the code for you using the machine.

2009 Mazda 5 check engine light after loose gas cap

If the code would have been due to the cap problem then the code will go away. Try resetting the code. Also try diagnosing again after disconnecting the battery and then reconnecting it after a few minutes.

Dashboard has alight just come on it looks like a engine or gear cog

This is calle dthe check engine light , this light comes on when the computer sees a problem, the computer stores a code in its memory, you can go to alot of autopart stores most of them will scan the computer for free and get the codes with a scan tool the code will tell you what is failing, for example it may be as simple as a loose gas cap. check and see if the gas cap is loose, if the cap is loose then tighten it and drive car for a week the light will reset if that was the problem, the computer is always testing all systems and if it was the cap the fuel system will pass the test and the light will go out if its not a loose cap then have it scanned, the code will tell you, for example lets say the code is po532, b1 o2 sensor heater, this would mean the front oyxgen sensor heater is bad, or that the connection to sensor is bad, hope this helps good luck.

Check engine light just came on tonite and ran the scanner and it says PO4055 code and also gas cap loose tightened the gas cap is this a vaccum hose on the emmission system ?

if the cap was loose then just drive around and the light should go out in a week or so depending on how many start/stop cycles you do. You could disconnect the neg battery but that would mess with other things, sooo just be patient. The light will go out on its own after the computer is satisfied there is no leak. A scanner can reset the light.

Check engine light came on Tuesday afternoon, after I filled the gas tank on Monday afternoon. If the check engine light came on because of the gas cap not being on tight enough, do I just tighten the gas...

Check engine light might have came on because of loose gas tank cap, but it's a good idea to read the code and check if it's not something else, you can take your car to an Auto Zone and they read the code for free and tell you the cause also. But if you want to reset the check engine light, only way is to disconnect the battery terminals and let it set overnight, check engine light will be reset. Hope it helps and let me know if you need more advice. Please don't forget to rate the answer it helps with my ratings, thanks!

What makes "check engine" light come on

a code stored in the computer will tell you what system triggered the check engine light.
The most common is an o2 sensor or evap code set off by a loose or faulty gas cap.after the vehicle is started about 50 times with no fault the light will go out.You can disconnect the battery for 1 minute and reset the computer, and unless the fault is still there, the check engine light will not come back on.Before you do this make sure you have the radio code handy, disconnecting the battery will lock out the radio on most new vehicles.

I have a 2006 grand prix and the check gas cap is on. Why?

Sometimes It will set a Code and After its Corrected the Light Needs to Be Manualy Reset By DISCONNECTING the POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL for 30-60 SECONDS AND THIS WILL RESET THE LIGHT.
