The stater is the stationary part of the altenator. It can fail but seldom does the rotor and the conn faill as do the brushes. If the altenator is not putting out 14.5 volts take it to the auto parts store and have it tested and buy a rebuilt unit if it's bad if you havn't got the $30 or so my parts store charges for that cars altenator then a junkyard may charge $25 a stator new will cost $40 an dthen you need to install it.

Engine won't start turn

no crank
1: battery dead, not charged. does it jump crank?
2: bad battery (corroded clean em) cables lugs. (4 ends)
3: bad starter /solenoid, assembly
4: engine seized, (turn it by hand you cant?)
5: bad key line, (from key switch to PRNDL to stater , no connections)

jump start it, if passed test, battery bad/discharged , and if fail?
you then (battery is good)
hot wire the starter solenoid, keys in pockets
fail? yes, bad starter, seized engine. turn by hand , now you know.
if passes hot wire test, bad key line. (tiny wire)

easy huh?

Did you have the starter tested? If not do that first.

My starter turns low. i checked every thing the batter is good, the charging is good, what is wrong? if i change the stater is it hard to put on?

sounds like we need a starter motor current draw test to evaluate ur starters condition.this can b done at any shop w a charging an starting system analyzer.if ur stater is drawing more than250 amps to325a or even higher amperage draw ur starter motor is bad..on a northstar the starter is under ur intake manifold, not an easy job,if u have the other caddy motor then starter can b changed from under car. not too bad to change,on a lift of course

How do i know if the starter is bad ? I just charged the battery but when i turn the key nothing happens, i haven't had this problem before,

Jump it to the battery,to see if it works. If it does, then you need a wiring diagram, to look over the starting circuit issues.
You could pull the starter and have the auto part store test it

1990 dakota starter will not work, I have checked the starter{removed it, cleaned it and checked its operation it works fine}when reinstalled it does the same thing, the solenoid will actuate but the...

Make sure your engine isnt locked up first. If not then replace the starter. Put a test light on the stater wire which is the smallest wire connecting to the starter, get someone to turn the key over while probing the wire if the test light lights up then you have a bad starter.

Starter Relay???

There's no relay. Either the solenoid is bad or you need to have your starter rebuilt or replaced. For help with repairs and finding parts check out saabnet dot com You can remove the starter and have it tested for free at some auto parts stores. Look up auto electric in your yellow pages for alternator and starter rebuilding, and save up to 50% vs a rebuilt starter from the parts store.
