2004 KIa Sedona LS Diesel 2.9 At 2000 revs the engine management light comes on & remains on till the ignition is switched off. On restart it is off until you hit that rev band. The car seems to run correctly. I am told fault code P1120 shows up on diagnostic machine. Can you advise what this relates to & how to cure it.

Sounds like you have damaged the fuel tank mounted fuel pickup pump. The pump is cooled and lubricated by the fuel it is immersed in, so when you lost all the fuel you likely ruined the pump.

I seem to remember the Sedona has a common rail diesel engine so in order to keep running after being turned off something is allowing power to keep flowing to the engine management.

While this could be a wiring fault or even a fault in the ECU itself, it is more likely to be something simple, such as, a broken ignition switch or a worn or broken drive from the steering lock to the ignition switch or perhaps the contacts of a relay are fused together.

If the engine stops when the ignition switch is disconnected...

any scan tool, (no year stated or country?)
the CEL/SES lamp tills you, scan ME to SEE, the DTC error
that what it means, also , excessive smog , happening. (may)
scan it.
get it scanned.

Check your ignition key switch, or better yet replace it. It could just be dirty resulting to poor electrical contact or it may really be defective. Make sure that your Preheaters are all okay,a faulty preheater accounts for hard starting to dead engine. ANother thing to check is your fuel pump. If there isnt enough diesel on the reservoir, your engine wont start.

The throttle position sensor on the intake area and the kickdown switch are both suspect in this. If your pushing hard enough to shift down it could be that sensor is faulty, If not the change in position is to fast for the faulting position sensor. Those are the cheapest things to replace, The other maybe the transmission modulator that tells the unit to shift down.

If its a diesel then replace the fuel filter unless you know when it was last changed (OK if less than 20k ago)

if the immo light doesnt come on it means the ecu has left the immobilizer on. it is a commen fault on kia. if you lock and unlock the car or sometimes just take the key out the ignition then put it back in it sorts the problem. if you dont see the IMMO light dont attempt to start it because it wont fire

You must have the engine control computer scanned for fault codes, that is the first step in diagnosing this problem
