How to ck. & change alternator

before you test the alternator, you should make sure your battery is good and fully charged. auto zone, advance, oreilly, will test both the battery and alternator for free... but if you have a voltmeter... with the car off check the voltage in the battery.. should be around 12.25 to 12.50. Have someone crank the car and watch the voltmeter... when cranking if the battery drops much below 11 volts.. the battery should def be charged and tested.
if the car cranks.. take your voltmeter and hold to the battery.. while running the alternator should be putting out around 13.3 to 14.0 volts.. if you turn the headlights on and it drops below 13 or it isn't putting out at least 13 when running, alternator is most likely bad. disconnect your battery... Negative Cable First Always!! when you do this...when you loosen the positive cable is you slip and hit metal.. it wont ark and possibly fry some electronics...when you hook the battery back up... Positive Cable First Always..same reason..
majority of newer vehicles will just have one belt...serpentine drive belt.. find the tensioner pulley and insert tool and push tensioner back and remove serpentine belt... if you don't work on cars often... take a picture of how the belt was run for when you go to put it back on..trust me take a picture unless you do these repairs often. most alternators will have two bolts one on top and one on the bottom... and have a wire connection with an electrical plug and usually a small 10mm or 8mm nut holding wire on the back of alternator... remove wires... remove alternator bolts.. replace in reverse order.. when putting belt back on you need to push tensioner pulley back. Hook your battery back up POSITIVE FIRST ALWAYS! crank and check with your voltmeter... or go have a free test at a local auto parts store!

How do I change a alternador in my 1999 plymoth Breeze 2.0

1 remove battery cables from battery 2 disconnect wires from alternator 3 loosen belt with the belt tensioner it will probly take a 3/8 drive ratchet to loosen the tensioner by putting the end that normaly goes into socket into a square hole in tensioner( just move tensioner far enough to slip belt off alternator pully) 4 remove bolts from alternator 5 put new alternator in place and put bolts in 6 put belt back over pulley 7 plug wires back on alternator 8 reconnect battery

How do i release automatic belt tensioner on 94 lincoln towncar to replace alternator

On the belt tentioner...there should be a square hole to allow you to insert a 3/8" or a 1/2" drive socket wrench or breaker bar into it.
Once this is done, you can get the belt off and replace your alternator.

Be sure to jot down a picture of the belt routing for when it comes time to put belt back on.

We need to replace an alternator belt on a 2001 saturn sl2 series

YOU MEAN THE CERPENTINE BELT?? IT ONLY HAS ONE I BELIEVE. BELOW THE TOP FRONT ENGINE MOUNT THERES A BELT TENSIONER PUT A WRENCH ON THE CENTER BOLT AND TURN IT TO LOOSEN THE BELT, (INSTALATION) TURN THE TENSIONER TO PUT THE BELT BACK ON. AND IF YOU FORGOT THE WAY THE BELT GOES BACK ON, CHECK THE DECAL BY THE RADIATOR AND YOULL SEE THE PICTURE HOW IT GOES.

Belt replaement

Sorry, with or without power steering ? Have look at this link.Scroll down to find yours, then click on picture to expand/explode for better view if needed. If it's got the idler pulley, you'll have to get a wrench on it and relieve tension, while putting belt back on. Careful, make sure wrench is all way on bolt.

Instructions

Just did mine today.....Jack up the front as high as possible, remove front passenger wheel, put jackstands under car so it doesn't come down on you, remove the plastic inside fender well by taking out the 2 bolts and 3 plastic toggles, you need to remove the alternator belt to get to the power steering belt so loosen the center nut on the idler pulley/tensioner and then loosen the idler using the bottom nut/bolt to take the tension off the belt, remove the alternator belt first drawing a picture of how the belt is routed on all the pulleys for reassembly. Now loosen the 2 face nuts/bolts on the power steering belt idler pulley/tensioner and then use the nut/bolt on it's bottom to take the tesion off the belt and then remove the belt. Reinstall the belt and reverse everything to get it back together. Put on a new alternator belt on while your at it.
