Hi,

P1159 - Variable intake motor malfunction.

VIS(Variable Intake System) is used to increase torque at lower rpm and increase horsepower at higher rpm. Sigma 3.5l engine has two intake runners for each cylinder. The primary intake runner is a long, thin tube in which the intake air passes through. This allows a strong stream of air to blast into the cylinder, helping low-end torque. The secondary intake runner is a short, fat tube. This allows a large volume of air to be sucked into the engine, increasing high-end horsepower. At lower rpm range, the engine does not provide enough suction into the cylinders, starving the engine of much needed oxygen. The skinny tube helps blast the air into the cylinder for more oxygen. At higher rpm, the engine has plenty of suction but the intake runner is too small to provide the oxygen it needs.

This has a electric motor on it Variable Intake Motor and it sounds like it went bad or the connection to the motor is loose try un plugging it and plugging it back in.If the code does not go away the Variable Intake Motor will need to be replaced.

P0320 - Ignition failure sensor malfunction

This usually refers to the faulty crankshaft position sensor. You could take a look at a nice guide :-

    Thanks for your response!!

You never mentioned the year of make. So, providing a generic detail. I am pretty sure that this would help. If not, revert with the year of make as well.

    Thanks for your response!!

If tachometer is also not working, i would like you to first check the ignition coils, plugs and plug wires .Hyundai's are VERY touchy sometimes with what plugs you use, but I'd think this more associated with the coils.

Note - Crankshaft position sensor could also be a reason for tachometer not working.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

P1159

P1159 means that the ECM cannot get confirmation that it has successfully changed intake geometry. I'm not sure that would be enough to make the engine run rich, but it's probably worth a check, especially since the motor is easy to get to and you've already replaced the MAF.

There is one TSB for DIAGNOSING DTC P1159 (VARIABLE INTAKE TARGET POSITION), if you can send me the email, could send you this information in PDF format.

Keep in touch.

How do i locate a crank sensor and the code comes up as po320. thank you

Yes the po320 code is no signal at the crank. It is located on the transmission bellhousing. Its on the lefthand side of the housing in the top quarter. At the back of the motor. After the problem has been fixed,do not disconnect the battery to clear the code.Get the codes cleared before starting the motor or the comp may set a trouble code for that.A scan tool is needed from a dealer or good shop.I hope this helps

Year 2001 XG300 P0115, P1159, P1191, P1193, P0115

P0115 - Engine Coolant Temp Sensr - open/short
P1159 - Variable Intake Motor Malfunction

P1191/P1193 Limp Home Valve - Low RPM

First, clean the throttle body and check for anything which might obstruct AIR FLOW to it.

The P1159 is the Variable Intake Motor Malfunction. this motor is either 'OPEN'... or 'CLOSED' position. It is located on/in the intake manifold (plenum) and is only opened when cruising... it is closed at idle. If it sticks 'OPEN' is can cause drivability issues.
