Its a 1991 Mitsubishi Mighty Max v6 4X4 3.0L I replaced the ECU a month ago i was just wondering what exactly the light means

The ecu has detected a fault. An OBD II scan is needed to extract the trouble codes. We need the codes to troubleshoot the fault. May be something minor.

  • Nick Vellis Oct 03, 2010

If the ECU has a fault what are usally the problem?

  • Jeff Turcotte
    Jeff Turcotte Oct 03, 2010

there are about a thousand codes. most common is a sensor fault of some kind. If there are no symptoms, the ECU is probably compensating for lack of data, but this often results in reduced gas mileage and can lead to bigger problems. Autozone and Advance offer a free scanning service to extract codes. Once we have the codes, we can recommend troubleshooting or repair actions.

hmmm...don't know. Are you saying the car is a CA car but you put in a non-CA ECU? I didn't know there was a difference. I thought they just use a different software flash, no? Can you go to autozone for a scan?

  • Nick Vellis Oct 03, 2010

Yes, this a California truck with a non-california ECU I. heard from my smog guy that the check engine light has to go off like it does with the california ECU. It does. So is the check engine light the same as the maitence-required light?

  • Jeff Turcotte
    Jeff Turcotte Oct 03, 2010

    yes, same thing

  • Nick Vellis Oct 03, 2010

On my truck I have a maitence required light AND a check engine light

  • Jeff Turcotte
    Jeff Turcotte Oct 03, 2010

never heard of that. Will have to look up. Do you have an owners manual?

  • Nick Vellis Oct 03, 2010

Yes, i just dont have it on me

  • Jeff Turcotte
    Jeff Turcotte Oct 03, 2010

OK, I'm reading up a bit on the truck. It has an old fashioned diagnostic system. You need an analog voltmeter to extract the codes. Do you have a voltmeter? It's OK to drive the truck. We'll get this figured out.

    Jeff Turcotte Oct 03, 2010

well, now I'm reading this is a bogus warning--just something they put in to get you into the shop. Did you just pass 150K miles on the odometer? or maybe 100K?

  • Jeff Turcotte
    Jeff Turcotte Oct 03, 2010

here is how to turn it off:
Just to the right side of the steering wheel post is a 1 inch by 2 inch plastic plug. The emergency lights are placed in a similar plug on the left side of the wheel. The plastic plug will come out easily with a small screwdriver or such, and located behind it about 1.5 inches, you will find a small switch. Take a screwdriver or lever and move the switch to the right or left. That will turn off the light for 50 k when you will need to do it again. when you do it again you will move the switch to the other side.

as far as maintenance required for the truck, you are supposed to replace the timing belt every 60K miles. This and other items should be covered in your manual, but this is the one I worry about the most, as timing belt failure can damage the engine and/or leave you stranded.

  • Nick Vellis Oct 04, 2010

Ok thanks. The truck has 189,000 miles on it the guy that had it before me did a great job doing regular maintenance. so he probably just didn't know how to turn the light off . I'm doing a valve job on it so its apart. I'm replacing all hoses and belts and such. This truck sat in the woods for about 3 years so it needs some maintenance. Any ideas?

  • Jeff Turcotte
    Jeff Turcotte Oct 04, 2010

belts and hoses is good. if you have rear drum brakes, check the cylinders there for leakage. There is probably a hose or 2 at the fuel tank that is old. Tires may be bad unless the truck was up on blocks while sitting. was it running before you took it apart?

  • Nick Vellis Oct 04, 2010

Yes it was running before i took it apart. when i got it about 4 months ago it was not running (bad ECU) but i replaced it.

Mitsubishi Mighty Max has 170,000 miles on it and maintenance light came on and will not go off

Yes, unplug the battery for 30 seconds, and the ECU will reset. If the light comes on again, get the error code read to see what the ECU thinks is the problem. At 170,000 miles, this is likely burning oil causing a misfire, might be the engine temp sensor wires are broken (causes hard starts when cold), might just be low power steering oil or even worn brake pads causing a low brake fluid level.

How do I go about manually resetting the maintenance required light on my 2.4L 1992 Mitsubishi Mighty Max pickup truck?

When service to the emission control system has been completed slide the switch to the opposite position, turning off the warning light.
If the service was for the 120,000 mile interval remove the warning light bulb.

CAUTION: If the speedometer is to be replaced set the odometer to the same reading as the odometer being removed. (consult your local motor vehicle laws)

Torque specs for mighty max

Per my Chilton's manual tehe bolts should be (cold engine) 65 to 72 FT. Pnds., the cam shaft bearing bolts should be 8x25 = 15 - 19 Ft pnds and the 8x65 should be 14 - 15 Ft Pnds.

The sequence is as follows for the (10 ) head bolts:

7 - 5 - 2 - 4 - 10

9 - 3 - 1 - 6 - 8

I hope this may help,
Tom
