Question about 1988 Mitsubishi Pickup

1 Answer

I have a 2004 shogun sport 2.5td. It was blowing black smoke badly. A garage fitted a new turbo. This worked for a day then the smoke came back even worse. I changed the injectors and the black smoke went straight away only to be replaced with billowing white/ grey smoke. I changed air filter. Oil and filter change also new glowplugs. But still white smoke bad when it warms up. Mechanic did a chemical test to see if head gasket had blown but said it's fine.

MY 2004 L 200 IS GETTING A RECONDITIONED ENGINE FITTED GARAGE SAID SAID THERE IS END FLOAT PLAY IN TURBO AND IF IT FAILS IT WILL DAMAGE THE ENGINE , TURBO 95000 MILES

This all depends, if the turbo blows apart or sends parts into the engine, the other thing is it will loose power or go through oil and burn oil causing failure of 02 sensors or converter, i would ask them how bad is it. the turbo could have some end play and still last, most of them dont blow apart but sometimes they do, this is a hard call as i would replace it with the new engine but money can stop me from doing so, if you can afford it then replace it but if not then leave it and keep an eye on it and if it feels like the turbo it not making more power on accel then be careful. good day.

93 Vector Sport. Turbo keeps cutting out

very common issue with post 2001 turbos. the fault is usualy down to the air flow meter (mounted on the airbox or induction pipe). you will find its at its worst when warm. do not fall for a garage telling you the turbo has failed.

Sounds like you need a new turbo, the turbo is lubed by engine oil and shaft seals leaking into the intake.

you "a" have a bad turbo,"b" left over oil burning off,& "c" a bad turbo for the whistleling. could be a bad blow off valve but not likely.

Black smoke from exhaust

This is almost certainly a split hose - mine was the large hose coming out of the bottom of the EGR valve.

Speaking to a parts guy at my local Jaguar dealer, he said that the new part is uprated as Jaguar are aware that this is a problem.

The split allows more air in and results in the ECU changing the mixture and over fuelling - Black smoke is an indication of un-burnt Diesel. As well as the black smoke you may also notice a whistle/whine or sucking noise when you accelerate and a lack of power / lumpiness at around 2000rpm.

Hope that helps!

Hi, I have a 2.0HDI Expert which was doing the exact same thing as yours, blowing thick black smoke, sluggish and loss of power on gradients, a hissing sound and surging. I replaced the air flow meter but that didn't help. I was told to replace the turbo but a turbo expoert told me not to as it would blow white smoke if it was faulty. I was then told to replace the injectors but a diagnostic test showed them to be functioning fine. I was then told to look at the intercooler which had thick sludge at the lower left pipe. I replaced it today - Sunday 12th July and it is now driving like a new van. It now pulls me up gradients with ease in 4th and 5th instead of having to drop gear to get to the top. I got a replacement from Euro Car Parts for £147 inc VAT. To tell if this is your problem, look through the gaps in the lower section of the bumper at what looks like the radiator and look for sludge over the inside of the bumper and all over the pipe where it joins the back of the radiator (intercooler). Also open the bonnet and look down behind the grille for the same sludge. Hope this sorts it for you. Barry, Newtownards, Northern Ireland.

Very smokey (smelly) exhaust

Grey-ish smoke sounds like rich mixture, not oil burning.Grey-to black is usually excess fuel.Whitish smoke is coolant being burned-bad news! If rich mixture, check for air intake leaks (air intake hoses/manifiold gasket),MAF,fuel pressure regulator.
