could be the tie rod ends or another steering component related to that. I know that it is definitely a steering issue.

97 VW Jetta GLS, manual transmission. The speedometer stopped working & the fuel gauge is jumping around.

Hi Ken You seem to have two faults with your vehicle. One will be a speed sensor and the other possibly a bad connection. Take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan and pin point the problems (which the scan will do) and then sort them out. Regards John

Reverse Gear does not work, Can this be repaired ? or replaced? So I do not use reverse.

This is very common, the reverse gears blows out, the reverse gear and some bushings need replacing, many trany shops wont do it, they rather sell you another trany, we had a retired vw tech that would repair them for us all you did was remove the trany, but anyway it can be repaired the parts cost about 150.00 then the rest is labor,

97 vw jetta gls manual transmission problems !?!?

It sounds pretty right on..
I mean - its unlikely that reverse would be torn up - unless some one grinded the heck out of it.. Or had trouble getting it in & slammed it in maybe breaking a few teath..

My manual reverse gear on my '96 VW Jetta spits out the reverse and makes a grinding sound?

You have bad sycronizers in the gearbox. They are made of softer metal so they will wear out. They are used to smoothly shifte from one gear to another. How does the clutch feel? Any play in the shifter? Could be the clutch going bad, or play in the shifter also.

If there is a grinding noise then you have a rev. gear, sounds like a clutch issue to me.
