SOURCE: Rear Drum Brake Install

Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the drum retaining nuts, if equipped, and remove the brake drum.
If the drum will not come off, pry the rubber plug from the backing plate. Insert a narrow rod through the hole in the backing plate and disengage the adjusting lever from the adjusting screw. While holding the adjustment lever away from the screw, back off the adjusting screw with a brake adjusting tool. Be careful not damage the notches in the adjusting screw or the self-adjusting mechanism will not function properly.
  1. Inspect the brake drum for scoring and wear. Replace or machine as necessary. If machining, observe the maximum diameter specification.
To install:
  1. If a new drum is being installed, remove the protective coating from the drum using brake cleaner. Sand the drum lightly and wipe with a cloth soaked in denatured alcohol.
  2. Adjust the brake shoes according to the procedure in this Section.
  3. Install the brake drum and the wheel and tire assembly.
  4. Lower the vehicle.

The 2 links are diagrams for shoe placement and the automatic brake adjuster.
Be sure to have the drums turned before installing the brake shoes.

Hope this answers your question. Best of luck on your repair.

SOURCE: need a full brake line diagram for 1992 ford

Too many variables here. Is there fluid in the master cylinder in the rear brake portion? Does a brake warning light come on when the brakes are applied? Is the pedal solid when braking or does it feel spongy? You could have a problem with the metering or proportioning valve. Since brakes are a safety item I suggest you check with one of the shops that offers free brake inspections.

How do I replace the rear axle assembly in a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis?

If you have air suspension, turn it off from the trunk. Put car on hoist and support rear axle. Make sure you support the axel well so the coil springs do not injure you when you remove the shocks and etc. Remove brake lines from brakes. Remove emergency brake cable from brakes. Remove sway bar link bolts to frame. Remove the bolts that hold axle to rear control arms. Remove rear shocks. ( these are a real pain ) Axle assembly can now be removed.

1993 Mercury Grand Marquis, Brake fluid leaking under left rear door. Brake pedal goes to floor. How can i fix this?

Hi, the reason the pedal goes to the floor is because the brake line going back to the rear axle blew, first you will need to find where the hole is and cut out the bad section, usually you can find a clean spot further down that you can cut out the bad spot. you will need to go to the parts store and get a new piece of brake line and a tubing cutter and a double flare kit. usually you can rent one of these to save money.

I have a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis and I'm trying to purchased the rear brake pads, but I don't know which ones to buy for my vehicle. What's the difference between a phenolic piston and steel piston....

What they are referring to is the caliper pistons. The phenolic should be plastic. You need to know what type of pistons your car has because there is a difference in the clips on the linings.

I also would recommend you to inspect the emergency brakes and if you are planning to keep your car the ceramic brakes are expensive but really quiet and no brake dust.

1994 grand marquis

1). get a helper first. perferablility some one can follow instruction.
have the helper set in the car and ready to step on the brake pedal.
2). fill the brake cylinder to the max mark. have the helper step on the brake 3 times and hold it . while you open the bleeder valve at the wheel brake cylinder. Watch the brake fluid, wait till it just before it empty out, close the valve. and tell the helper to release the brake. do this till there is not air coming out, just steady stream of brake fluid. close the valve. and move to the other wheel.
IT IS IMPORTANT THE HELPER DO NOT RELEASE THE BRAKE PEDAL BEFORE YOU CLOSE THE VALVE. if that happen, you just have to keep doing it till all air are out.
3). start from the rear right, rear left, front right, front left.
4). maek sure the fluid in the master clyinder do not drop below the min line.
5). fill the master brake cylinder with fluid and ready to go.
