There used to be a switch on automatics called the neutral lock out switch. This served the function of keeping you from trying to start the car while already in gear and also turned on the backup lights. It was connected mechanically to the gear selector. The contacts would wear with age, causing starter and back up light problems . Suppose they have something similar these days. drop by a dealer and ask the parts desk guy. He will know what it is and where it is.

2003dodge caravan neutral safty switch

Test/Service/Replace Neutral Safety Switch
Most neutral safety switches are combinations of a neutral safety switch and a backup lamp switch. Others have separate units for these two distinct functions. When the reverse light switch is not part of the neutral safety switch, it seldom needs adjustment, as it is directly activated by the transmission or the gear selector linkage.
f_ttat_t3.20.jpg Typical location of a neutral safety switch on a transaxle. Reprinted with permission of Ford Motor Company. A neutral safety switch allows current to pass from the starter switch to the starter when the lever is placed in the P or N position. Some neutral safety switches are nonadjustable. If these prevent starting in the P or N position and the gear selector linkage is correctly adjusted, they should be replaced.
To adjust a typical neutral safety switch:
  • Place the shift lever in neutral.
  • Loosen the attaching bolts for the switch.
  • Using the angling pin, move the switch until the pin falls into the hole in its rotor.
  • Tighten the attaching bolts.
  • Recheck the switch for continuity. If no voltage is present, replace the switch.
  • The switch sometimes controls the operation of the back-up lights also. With the engine off and the key on, put the selector in reverse position. Check the back-up lights to see that they are on. Then, check in the drive position to see that they are out.

I have a 1999 dodge caravan. Passenger sign turn signal flashes for a short period & goes solid. Reverse light & brake light work just fine. Multifunction switch, light sockets, light assembly...

Sounds like the relay is burning out. When the lights stop flashing does the indicator on the dash light up and stay on and/or does the exterior lights light up and stay on? If the indicator light is staying on then you have a wiring problem to the lights or you have the wrong bulb/ bulbs. If the exterior lights stay on it is a bad relay or power to the relay.

Reverse lights stay on

The neutral start/back-up light switch is at fault. the swich is located on the lower front edge of transaxle. To replace the switch put a drain pan under the transaxle and remove the switch. Some fluid will come out of the transaxle during removal. Install in the reverse of removal. Refill transaxle to proper level before driving. Hope this will help you.

Could be a worn or defective door switch. That is the first thing I would check.

99 dodge caravan parking lights stay on after engine is off.

I had the same problem on my Chrysler Sebring but it was with the headlights staying on. The lights are on a relay called a "delay relay" of which will allow the lights to stay on for a minute after shutting off the ignition (after using your lights let's say when its dark). This of course helps provide light for you to see to walk to your house, keys, etc. But sometimes these relays stick on and just need to be replaced.

Reverse lights are on when ever the car is on

it is usually the neutral safety switch which controls the reverse kight however some vehicles had a seperate back up light switch which could be causing the light to stay on.
