Question about 2000 Lincoln Continental
It means there is a sensor bad or related to one of them, need to scan it, which some parts stores do for free and thay can tell you what it says and figure it out from there. if the check engine light flashes it means ther is a misfire condition that would be your first start to do.....

When the check engine light comes on it detected a problem in the engine management system. The engine management looks for open sensors, gounded out sensor it looks for normality and function. Then you have the catalytic convertor the engine management is to protect the catalytic. The check engine light is design for performance and drivabilty and emissions. If the check engine light is on you now operate out of range and out of plane.Your out of fuel control. Depending on what the code is. The ECM will subsitute a value to keep the engine in performance. A disconnected hose,a wire,a failing sensor will cause the light on,A simple visual inspection can hepl resolve the issue. If you correct the the situation like a loose gas cap, The check engine light , wont just turn off ,either you uses a scan tool or it takes up to 3 good start up,meaning the engine has to shut down, temperature need to be 160 F. then warm up,This is one trip, youll need to do it again ,this will be a second trip, a total of 3 good trips. Or 40 good ignition start up. For the ECM to shut the light off.
