Disconnect the battery under the hood under the brake cylinder on steering shaft there is an 11/16 nut remove that slide the bolt out there should be a small linkage arm with a rod going to the transmission remove the clip that holds the rod to the small arm and pop out the rod it might be tough under the dash on floor unbolt the bolts 7/16 head around the black plate to the left of the gas pedal up under the dash where the column meets the dash there are 2 studs pointing down remove the nuts 9/16 head and slowly lower the column down just enough to reach in and remove the electrical plugs from the ignition switch turn signal plug and the bottom of column the neutral safety switch turn the column so the small arm clears the hole in floor and pull the column up towards you while tugging on it hope this helps

How to remove the ignition cylinder in my pontiac firebird 1996

You will have to remove all the cowlings from the steering column to access the ignition lock and switch. With the correct key inserted and selected to, probably, the ACC position, you should be able to push on either a pin or a tongue that protrudes from the switch into the housing and the pull the whole lock/switch mechanism out.

How to replace a ignition swicth on a 1985 pontiac firebird

Disconnect Negative Battery cable. Disconnect electrical connector from switch. Remove 2 small bolts mounting switch to steering column. Remove actuator rod from switch if on outside, or it may be a knob underneath. New switch will usually be pre-set to "Off" position. Attach actuator rod to switch or mount switch over knob and mount to column with 2 small bolts, being careful not to change switch position while doing so. Re-connect wiring to switch, then Negative Battery cable. Check for proper operation with foot firmly on brake. Make sure that Accessory as well as Start and Run functions operate according to corresponding key position. Switch may need to be adjusted if out of sync.

Tilt steering after locking into a position will still wobble as though the universal joint is loose in the steering column. I have tried to get access to the univewrsal joint but have not been sucessfull...

most of the gm columns i've encountered from that era have a set of bolts that are only accessible after removing the steering wheel and the turn signal switch mechanism, this will require a set of specialized steering column tools, these are usually available for rent from most auto parts stores, the tools are important to prevent damage to the column parts and to prevent injury, there's a spring under pretty good pressure in there, consult a factory or haynes type service manual before taking any of this apart.

How to remove and install new ignition switch into a 1995 firebird

First you have to disconnect your battery, then remove the air bag and all of the goodies in your steering column down to your signal assembly. You then have to unplug the little white and purple wires(this is the security **** that goes to the switch) you then remove the small hex bolt that is holding the switch in place.Pull it out and replace with new switch, don't forget to plug the security wires back up or your car will not start.

How do you change an ignition switch in a 1988 Firebird

You'll need to lower the steering column. It is usually mounted on top of the steering column, with 2 screws, and a couple of plugs plugging into it. Usually down towards the firewall.

Ignition switch removal

get a proper steering wheel puller, pull the steering wheel off. remove the screw for the hazard switch. remove 1 screw and a metal bracket for the signal switch. remove 3 screws holding the white switch in top of column. Then you need to pull this switch up out of the way, but in order to do this without wrecking it, you need to remove the plastic panels underneith the column to get at the column mounting bolts. there should be 2 13mm nuts holding the column to the dash. remove these. then there should be 4 13mm bolts holding the bracket to the column. remove these and there should be a plastic casing that th wires go through. remove this and unplug the wiring. now you can push the wiring up and out of the way without wrecking your signal switch. now remove 1 philips head screw holding the ignition switch in place and pry it out gently with a flat screwdriver.

installation is reverse procedure of removal
