SOURCE: intake manifold leaking coolant at expansion tube nipple

It is pressed in. I usually just take the nipple out and run a threader into the hole and place a piece of threaded copper pipe into the newly tapped hole. The factory uses a thin steel tube and they rust out if the cooling system is not properly maintained.

SOURCE: Heater hose connecter pulls out of intake manifold

Try cleaning the tube and manifold where they connect (use small wire brush or?). I would try using JB Weld @ the fitting before i would even consider a new intake. Water pressure in the cooling system shouldn't be much over 15-18 lbs. so doing this quick fix should solve the problem.

you need to have the computer reset to get the check engine light to shut off there is a list of error codes that has to be cleared from the computer so the check engin light will shut off but it wont hurt to drive with the light on for a while as long as you fixed the problem

Replacing intake manifold gasket:
Replacing the intake manifold gasket, I used the tube kind, it's a make it youself for about $6 (it's blue and the consistancy of toothpaste) follow directions carefully! You can get a tube at Autozone or any car parts store. Has been working great. Just ask the cashier for the make it yourself kind of intake manifold gasket. Sorry, I don't remember the name of it, it's been that long...lol...

As for the Intake Manifold leaking coolant....It could, but shouldn't. One of the largest problems I've seen for coolant to leak out the Intake Manifold has been due to pressure in the system somewhere... Check the classic area:
Water pump- look for either water seapage and/or coolant. You'll know if it is because you will see real water either coming out of the water pump leak hole or under the thermostat. Most of the time coolant will pool where your heater hose runs in the intake manifold.

Mentioning heater hose. Check for leaks, holes, and/or cracked heater hoses. In-addition to the water pump, heater hoses...Check the transmission system, exhaust system, fuel system, radiator system, A/C system, secondary fan (located above the water pump housing), and thermostat.Also, check all electrical connections....Hummm....This is almost the entire workings of the vehicle.

NOTE: "It seems to be an infinity kinda thing... Once one thing starts to fail and is ignored, you are bound to be fixing a chain of event failures. Therefore, Do not ignore even the smallest problem or you'll be bound for life in repairs...."

What they mean is the water coolant hoses connected to the inlet manifold these will need to be removed as part of the job l can`t fore see any major problems it`s pretty striaght foward..

Coolant line under intake is leaking 95 town car


95 Lincoln town car coolant leak under intake SOLUTION EASY

Ok this is a 4" piece of hose leaking on a tube that runs under the intake manifold and fastens to the rear of the engine with 2 small bolts that are very hard to get to. The heater core hooks up to this tube with a 5/8 hose that's 3/4 on the other end going into the heatrer core.
Solution:
remove alternator
see clamp on hose?
remove it.
If you can't remove it, clamp vice grips on it and take a steak knife and cut through the hose towards the rear of the engine. Now with large screw driver pry the hose and clamp off the nub on the rear of the water pump housing. You may have to move the tube and remaining hose out of the way first. Just stick your hands in there and force it out of the way. Now you have a clean nub to hook a 5/8 bypass hose to. Here's where you get it. Go back to the heater core and and remove the hose that connects to this tube that runs under the intake. Just cut it where it hooks to the tube and remove it carefully from the heater core because this is now your needed bypass hose. Now with a couple feet of 3/4 hose and a coupler you have all you need to reroute this water outlet around the engine to the heater core. Take your hose you cut from the other end of the tube and removed from the heater core and and fasten it to the nub on water pump housing use new screw type stainless Steel clamps. You have to take this one apart to put it on. Stick a 3/4 coupler into the other end and route a long section of 3/4 hose under alternator to the heater core using SS clamps where needed. job done... Just leave the old tube where it is under the intake manifold......Thank you Very Much

Heater fan blows good but only blows cold air. Is it the heater core? The thermostat? How hard are they to replace if i do it myself?


Check the heater core by checking the hotness or coldness of the 2 tubes at the firewall that lead to the heater core.

If both tubes are hot, the heater core is fine. If both tubes are cold, then the heater core is plugged up and will have to be flushed out or replaced.

The thermostat, if stuck open, will delay the heating up of the heater core. It's not hard to replace the thermostat.

Thermostat Removal & Installation 4.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Some of the coolant
    • The upper radiator hose f150_42_thermostat.gif

    • The bolts (A).
    • The water outlet connection (B)
    • The water thermostat and paper gasket assembly (C)
To Install:
NOTE: The water thermostat is indexed and must be installed correctly.
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • The water thermostat
    • The thermostat
    • The water outlet adapter
    • The bolts
      1. Torque to: 80 inch-lbs (9 Nm)
    • The upper radiator hose
    • The coolant
4.6L/5.4L Engines To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.

How to replace a thermostat on a 1999 Nissan Quest?


1999 Nissan/Datsun Truck Quest Mini Van 3.3L SFI 6cyl

The thermostat is located in the thermostat housing, which is mounted to the coolant crossover tube. The bypass hose is connected to the thermostat water inlet on one end, and to the intake manifold water outlet on the other. The thermostat is not located in the intake manifold water outlet, where the upper radiator hose is connected.

Need to replace the intake manifold


3.8L Engine (most common) Upper Intake Manifold To Remove:
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable.
    • Fuel injector sight shield.
    • Air cleaner intake duct.
    • Right spark plug wires from the ignition control module and reposition.
  3. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Fuel rail assembly.
    • Brake booster hose from the vacuum source manifold in the upper intake manifold.
    • Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR) wiring harness heat shield nut, bolt and the EGR heat shield.
    • Throttle body support bracket upper bolt.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the following:
    • EVAP purge solenoid
    • Throttle Position (T/P) sensor
    • Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
    • Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
    • EVAP purge solenoid vacuum line from the throttle body.
    • Accelerator and the cruise control cables with the bracket from the throttle body.
  6. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold bolts and stud.
    • Clean the upper intake manifold bolt threads.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold by lifting the back of the intake and sliding the manifold forward from the throttle body support bracket.
    • Upper-to-lower intake manifold carrier gasket from the upper intake manifold.
  8. If the upper intake manifold is being replaced, remove the following:
    • Throttle body assembly.
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
    • Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve.
    • Vacuum source manifold.
Upper intake manifold bolt torque sequence (3.8L engine) gm-03-38-530.gif

To Install:
  1. If the manifold was replaced, install or connect the following:
    • Vacuum source manifold.
    • Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve.
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor.
    • Throttle body assembly.
    • Upper-to-lower intake manifold carrier gasket to the upper intake manifold.
  2. Carefully place the upper intake manifold onto the lower intake manifold. Ensure that the alignment pins in the upper intake manifold align with the holes in the lower intake manifold. NOTE: Apply thread lock compound, to the bolt threads before assembly.
  3. Install or connect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold. Tighten the upper intake manifold bolts in sequence to 89 in lbs (10 Nm)
    • Accelerator and the cruise control cables with the bracket to the throttle body.
    • EVAP purge solenoid vacuum line to the throttle body.
  4. Connect the electrical connectors to the following:
    • Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor
    • Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
    • Throttle Position (T/P) sensor
    • EVAP purge solenoid
  5. Install or connect the following:
    • Throttle body upper support bracket bolt. Tighten the bolt to 89 in lbs (10 Nm)
    • EGR valve wiring harness heat shield, nut and the bolt. Tighten the nut and the bolt to 89 in lbs (10 Nm)
    • Brake booster hose to the vacuum source manifold.
    • Fuel rail assembly.
    • Right spark plug wires.
    • Air cleaner intake duct.
    • Fuel injector sight shield.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Fill the cooling system.
  8. Inspect for fluid or vacuum leaks.
Lower Intake Manifold (W/O Supercharger) To Remove:
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Upper intake manifold.
    • Generator brace.
    • Drive belt tensioner with the mounting bracket and the heater water bypass inlet pipe.
    • Exhaust gas recirculation EGR outlet pipe bolt from the lower intake manifold.
    • Radiator inlet hose from the water outlet housing.
    • ECT sensor electrical connector.
    • Right upper engine mount strut bracket.
    • Generator brace bracket bolts.
    • Generator brace bracket.
    • Lower intake manifold bolts.
    • Lower intake manifold.
    • Lower intake manifold seals.
    • Lower intake manifold gaskets.
  2. If replacing the lower intake manifold, Remove or disconnect:
    • Water outlet housing bolt and stud
    • Water outlet housing
    • Gasket and the thermostat.
    • ECT sensor.
  3. Inspect the flatness of inlet flanges.
  4. Clean the intake manifold mating surfaces.
  5. Clean the intake manifold bolts and bolt holes of adhesive compound.
To Install:
  1. If removed, install the ECT sensor.
    • Tighten the ECT sensor to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
  2. If removed, install the thermostat, the gasket, and the water outlet housing.
  3. If removed, install the water outlet housing bolt and the stud.
    • Tighten the bolt and stud to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm)
  4. Install or connect the following:
    • Lower intake manifold gaskets. NOTE: Apply sealer GM P/N 12346286 (Canadian P/N 10953472) or equivalent to the ends of the intake manifold seals.
    • Lower intake manifold seals.
    • Lower intake manifold.
    • Lower intake manifold bolts.
    NOTE: Apply thread lock compound GM P/N 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to the two hidden bolts and ensure they are installed.
  5. Tighten the lower intake manifold bolts in sequence to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) gmpc_v6_5.gif

  6. Install or connect the following:
    • Generator brace bracket.
    • Generator brace bracket bolts. Tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
    • Right upper engine mount strut bracket.
    • ECT sensor electrical connector.
    • Radiator inlet hose to the water outlet housing.
    • EGR outlet pipe to the lower intake manifold.
    • EGR outlet pipe bolt to the lower intake manifold. Tighten the bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm)
    • Drive belt tensioner.
    • Generator brace.
    • Upper intake manifold.
  7. Inspect for leaks.
Lower Intake Manifold (W/ Supercharger) To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the supercharger.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing.
  5. Remove the EGR pipe at the intake manifold.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connection at the temperature sensor.
  7. Remove the intake manifold and gaskets.
NOTE: The coolant bypass tube will release from the intake manifold when the manifold is removed.
To Install:
  1. Clean the gasket sealing surfaces.
  2. Install the intake manifold gaskets.
  3. Align the coolant bypass tube with the opening in the intake manifold and install the manifold. Tighten the bolts to 11 lb ft (15 Nm).
  4. Install the electrical connector to the temperature sensor.
  5. Install the EGR pipe to the intake manifold.
  6. Install the thermostat housing.
  7. Install the supercharger.
  8. Fill the cooling system.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.

Coolant leak at intake 1994 Buick LeSabre 3.8 ltr


There are several areas of possible leakage. One is the hose and plastic outlet from the intake manifold on the passenger side of the engine. The hose runs low, underneath the alternator. The plastic outlet cracks, the hose gets old, the clamps on the hose can also be loose. The replacement outlet from the dealer is steel, not plastic.
Another possibility for leakage is on the driver's side of the intake manifold. Underneath the air inlet is a metal cover on the end of the intake manifold. This covers the coolant passages at the end of the intake. Mine was oozing antifreeze..you don't have to pull the intake to replace this.
The other place for leaks is the intake itself..requiring removal of the intake. I've done this...I don't think it is that bad of a job. However, if you put in a new intake, don't forget to put in a pcv valve..it fits under a small cover at the right rear of the intake manifold.

SECTION 303-08: Engine Emission Control 1999 Cougar Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve Removal
  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
    1. Disconnect the intake air bypass hose.
    1. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hoses.
    1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
  1. Disconnect the tube from the exhaust gas recirculation valve.
  1. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation valve.
    • Disconnect the vacuum hose.
Installation
  1. sxu~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: When cleaning the gasket faces, do not allow debris to enter the intake manifold or exhaust gas recirculation valve.
    Clean the gasket faces of the intake manifold and exhaust gas recirculation valve.
  1. Install a new exhaust gas recirculation valve gasket.
  1. Position the EGR valve and install the bolts.
    • Install the vacuum hose.
  1. Connect the EGR tube.
  1. Install the idle air control valve. For additional information, refer to Section 303-14A . For additional information, refer to Section 303-14B .
