SOURCE: need timing marks ford ranger

The timing marks are on your timing belt cover. There is a little circle on the bottom right of the cover near the harmonic balancer that you can pop out to see if your distributor accesory gear is in the correct position. The camshaft has a triangle on the inside of the gear that you can line up with this accesory gear. The bottom of the timing belt cover has your timing tick marks and you may have to clean off this rectangular piece that is sticking out on the cover to see the marks. A good timing gun and remembering where the number 1 cylinder on your distributor is a good start to timing your motor. Refer to a Haynes Manual and it will give you a good guide line on how to time your motor with TDC. I hope you have good luck with this!

Chances are the linkage for the transfer case is out of adjustment try loosening the adjuster bolt and put the 4WD shifter into the position 4WD high or low (depending upon which position it's lockup in) then lock down the adjuster bolt, try to shift out of 4wd sometimes you need to go forward and backward with the vehicle to get it out of 4wd, when you get it out of 4wd you may have to fine tune the adjustment to get it to engage and disengage smoothly it's a trial and error thing keep resetting adjuster until you get the desired effect.

Belt covers need to be on. Timing mark on crankshaft (while on compression stroke) should line up with TDC mark on cover. then Camshaft mark, needs to line up by looking through access hole of cover, and align mark on cam sprocket with pointer on inside of belt cover.

What are trying to do, change the belt or just set the timing? The timing marks should be on the left side (drivers side) near the front pulley. There is a notch or line on the pulley and the scale is on the timing cover. If you are trying to change the timing belt, you have to remove the fan and water pump pulley, then crank pulley and the timing cover. If you are changing the belt, here's a helpfull hint loosen the tensioner bolts, one 13mm one 17mm, then pull or push on the belt to force the ternsioner back as far as you can and tighten the 13mm bolt. Now you can take the old belt off and put the new belt on with ease. You have to set the crank at zero, I think the key in the crankshaft is straight up at this point, there is a diamond shaped mark on one of the teeth of the pulley, that lug has to line up with the notch in plastic behind the pulley. At this point you want the arrow on the cam pulley to point to the mark on the inner cover (about 6 o'clock) and the rotor in the distributor should point to the "V" notch in the pick up coil assembly (about 6 o'clock). How do i take the timeing belt of a 87 ford ranger


The 87 Ford Ranger 2.9L is chain driven. They dont have a timing belt. Now the 2.3L 87 Ranger were belt driven.
