If the shaft is stuck in the hub, put the nut back on the shaft and screw it down even with the end of the shaft. Hit it with a rubber mallet to break it loose.

There are thee ways to do this. The first, easiest, but least reliable way is to use split boot repair kit. This allows you to cut the old boot off, clean the joint as best you can, install new grease, and bolt the split boot into place and clamp it. These boots have a higher-than-average failure rate however. The next ways require jacking up the drivers side of the car, remove the wheel, caliper, and rotor. Then remove the hub nut that secures the half-shaft to the wheel bearing. Using a crowbar or other suitable tool, you must pry the inner CV joint out of the transaxle and maneuver the half-shaft out of the vehicle. You must take care not to separate the inner CV joint as it is easily damaged if overextended. You may have to separate the lower ball joint from the lower control arm to remove this shaft as it is the shorter of the two and has less space to work for removal. Once you have the half-shaft out, there are two options - repair or replace. Repair requires removal of the joint from the half-shaft assembly, and it can be difficult for someone with no experience. The easier option is to replace the entire half-shaft with a re-manufactured one. The cost is not much more than that for the repair parts, plus you don't have to worry about dirt, grit and debris in the joint damaging it since it is already fully sealed. Replacement is the reverse of removal. You simply insert the shaft thru the wheel bearing opening and into the transaxle. You must "pop" the inner joint into place to latch it, otherwise it will cause damage by leaking and binding. You will feel it lock in when you do it. The last thing that is critical is that the hub nut has a specific torque requirement. Too much or too little torque will cause the wheel bearing to fail very quickly. So use a reliable torque wrench set at the correct setting. There is no "feel" for the correct tightness on this nut.

The moment you can hear a loud noise coming from front wheels while driving straight that means that your wheel bearings are ready for replacement. In a Mazda 323 BJ (1999-2004) it usually comes every 150-200 thousand kilometers (95-120k miles). To replace the bearing (do two of them in one go even if only one can be heard) you need to do as follows:
Loosen the nut on the half shaft, jack up the car, remove the wheel, dismantle brake caliper and brake disc, remove all ball joints attached to the hub, detach the shock absorber from the hub (no need of removing it completely), once you have the hub basically hanging on the half shaft, untie the nut and pull the hub out of the shaft so you can hold it in your hands. You will need to go to a garage with a 12ton (minimum) press, no point of trying to hammer the bearing out as you may damage the hub and your whole work will be for nothing. Get the old bearing pressed out and the new one pressed in.The Mazda part numbers for the front bearing kit are: B455-33-047A(B,D),GJ21-33-042B,G304-33-065,B21M-33-048.
After getting the bearing fitted into the hub, all we need is to reverse the whole process, put the shaft into the hub, attached the hub to the shock absorber (makes it easier to attach the rest), put the nut and tight it just as much to feel there is nearly no movement (do not overtight it as this might damage the bearing), attach all ball joints back to the hub. Make sure all nuts are tight, use a
tension wrench when needed, put the brake disc back on the hub, install the brake caliper, once you have all them on and tight put on the wheel, then get someone to press the brake while you tight the shaft nut with the tension wrench, check the wheel for play or hard movement. Lower the car down and take a slow drive around (do not accelerate sharply or brake rapidly, just a gentle drive around. Normally a wheel bearing should be in correct position and use after about 200km (120 miles) distance. After that check if it is not overheating (too tight) or there is a play (too loose). Tight or untight if necessary, recheck after same 200km (120 miles).

How do iI remove the front wheel bearing?

The front wheel bearings on your Dodge Dakota allow the wheels to spin freely on the axle spindle. These sealed bearings may cause noise once they wear out, develop a pit on the races, bends and other damage that interfere with wheel performance. However, the front bearings form a single assembly with the wheel hubs and they should be replaced as a single unit. Fortunately, installing a new assembly is not a difficult process.

  1. Removing the Hub/Bearing Assembly
    • Before raising the front wheel(s), loosen the half shaft nut using an axle nut socket. Then remove the wheel/tire assembly and the half shaft nut. If your particular Dakota model comes equipped with an Anti-lock Bake System (ABS) sensor, remove the sensor form its bracket and move it aside.

      Now you are ready to remove the brake caliper and rotor. Make sure to secure the caliper to the coil spring using a piece of heavy wire. Do not let it hanging by the brake line to avoid damage to the brake hose attached to the caliper. With the caliper and rotor out of the way, you have access to the hub/bearing assembly mounting bolts.

      On some models, you can only access the hub/bearing mounting bolts through the holes in front of the hub/bearing assembly. Rotate the assembly by hand as you loosen and remove the mounting bolts. Once you remove the bolts, you can detach the hub/bearing from the steering knuckle and halfshaft. If the bearing assembly seems stuck to the halfshaft, use a 3 jaw gear puller to remove it.

How do you change a wheel seal on a mercury mountaneer 1998 rear end

Axle Vent
NOTE: If the vent cannot be cleared, it must be installed new.
A plugged vent will cause excessive seal lip wear due to internal pressure buildup. If a leak occurs, check the vent. Make sure the vent hose is not kinked. Remove the hose from the vent nipple and clear the hose of any foreign material. While the hose is removed, pass a length of mechanics wire or a small diameter Allen wrench in and out of the vent to clean it. Connect the hose when done. The vent is located on the drivers side top of axle housing.
If you plan on doing most repairs yourself I would suggest buying a Haynes or Chilton manual for your particular vehicle. Or there are some data disks on e.bay($12-$15) For a cost of under $25, you can almost do any repair yourself with these manuals.Also there are online manuals like the site called ALLDATA where guides can be viewed for a fee. All these solutions will save you time and money, and give peace of mind over correct repairs. I can post you some procedures here also.

                                                            Removal

Add Motorcraft Rear Axle Lubricant XY-90-QL or KL (ESP-M2C154-A) or equivalent until it is 6-14mm (1/4-9/16 inch) below bottom of fill hole. Add 118.3 mL (4 oz) of Ford Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A (EST-M2C118-A) or equivalent to Traction-Lok axles. Install fill plug and tighten to 20-41 Nm (15-30 lb-ft).
                                                            1. Install rear brake anti-lock sensor indicator . Tighten retaining bolt to 4.5-6.8 Nm (40-60 lb-in).
                                                            1. Install rear disc brake caliper and rear disc brake rotor .

                                                            Installation
                                                            1. Lubricate the lip of the wheel bearing oil seal
                                                              • Use Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B.
                                                            1. s3b~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not damage the wheel bearing oil seal.
                                                              Install the two axle shafts.

                                                              Install the U-washer.
                                                              1. Position the two U-washers on the button end of the axle shaft.
                                                              1. Pull the axle shaft outward.
                                                            1. NOTE: If a new pinion shaft lock bolt is unavailable, coat the threads with Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5 prior to installation.
                                                              Install the differential pinion shaft.
                                                              1. Align the hole in the differential pinion shaft with the case lock bolt hole.
                                                              1. Install a new differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
                                                            1. Install the differential housing cover and fill the rear axle with the specified lubrication. For additional information, refer to Differential Housing Cover in this section.
                                                            1. Install the rear brake anti-lock sensor. For additional information, refer to Section 206-09A .
                                                            1. Install the rear brakes. For additional information, refer to Section 206-04 .
                                                            1. Install the tire and wheel assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 .

                                                            Remove front axle from differential on 2003 dodge ram

                                                            That works fine on a relatively new vehicle but one that has run in salt etc you'll save a lot of time if you remove the steering knuckle completey by separating lower ball joint and outer tie rod end ball joint and bring the whole steering knuckle to a bench to separate the hub/bearing. Soak everything with penetrant, loosen the bolts a few turns and try hitting right on the bolt heads. I also made a very sharp wedge from a chisel and rammed it hard on the other side to seoarate the hub. It will finally come apart then you'll see all the **** that was binding it due to an alumininum knuckle re-acting with a steel hub. Clean the hole and grease everything and fit new bearings
