I just bought a 1987 Toyota Cressida. It has a problem at times starting. It seems that after taking the car on a short trip (aroung the block), sometimes it will not start. When the key is turned the lights on the dash come on and a slight clicking sound from (a relay, I assume), but that is all. If I let the car sit for 15 minutes, it starts up fine. This is intermittent and hard to reproduce. Battery is brand new. I haven't started to make voltage checks yet. I'm waiting for a wiring schematic that I ordered. The Park/neutral cut-off switch works fine when the car starts correctly (if I put it in gear it does cut off the ignition o.k.) Don't know how to tell if that switch is working when the car does not start, though. I realize that there is a break in the ckt, but not sure how to localize the problem systematically.

When I get a problem like that, I usually start with replacing the fuel filter and checking the fuel pump pressure. But most of the time, it ends up being a crack in the plastic coil or distributor cap that is wider when it is hot than when it is cold.
sounds like your ignition timing is REALLY REALLY late, should be 10 degrees BTDC. also check the air filter as this could cause poor acceleration. those 5M-GE/7M-GE engines also want premium gas (91 pump octane or better) they run horribly on lower grade gasolines.
If it has glow plugs or an intake heater you will need to disable the circuit. Then you can use a small amount of ether to spray into the air cleaner.!!! If you spray too much and/or Dont disable the circuits you can damage the motor!!! When you spray the ether, if the engine starts and stalls then its not getting fuel. This could be related to the fuel pump, injection pump, the fuel system loosing its prime(fuel line leak), fuel shut-off valve or solenoid. If it doesn't start then it could be related to your timing, valves or maybe compression.
Hi, I believe the answer is YES! I have an 1985 Cressida wagon. I bought is used and frankly, did not ev en know it HAD an alarm until it went off a month later. But my engine doesnt engage intermittently. It makes NO sounds, not even a click or anything. I found out this happens regularly and the alarm is usually to blame, as if triggered, it disengages the engine. if you hear noise of any kind, have this checked.
I did find it I jump it , it works great! ...however, i can tell when I lock the door, subtle differences in the feel of the key turning that has been 100% indicator of the alarm disengaging the battery. When I get in, sure enough, the car will not turn over.
Someone told me to just take one of the battery terminals off and put back on and the engine will re-engage. Hah! sure. like I know how to do that.
I bought a portable battery charger 19.95 and self jump it. It works every time,. I am not sure why, but it does.
I am now trying to locate a wiring and maintenance manual so I can just have the Alarm removed. The battery is 1000% great.
