Question about 1992 Ford Probe

Cooling fans My cooling fans are not coming on after the motar heats up. I've jumped the fans to test them and they work fine. What else could it be?

A SENSOR SWITCH located at the bottom of the radiator , its a TEMP. SWITCH , hope this helps AJ

Transmission could be running hot. Most times tranny fluid also runs through the sides of the radiator. Or a transmission cooler somewhere near the radiator and in some cases will make temp gauge rise

Cooling system fan don't come on

    I'm Ben and -- hopefully -- I can provide some meaningful assistance.
  • Check if it is getting power. Check fuse No. 34.
  • Check the cooling fan relay.
  • Run engine to bring temp up then turn off engine, disconnect harness,Visually inspect for pinched wires.
  • Test for power with a test light(have to turn ignition on).
  • If you have power could be a faulty fan (try spinning it to jump start it and see if it takes off).
  • No power could be a faulty sensor or bad wiring.
  • My experience with this type of problem points towards a malfunctioning temp switch if everything has checked out at this point.
  • It's located at lower cooling house, bottom right.
  • To Test that you need to bridge or jump the terminals. If you hold the terminal with the fastener on top and flat side left.
  • Test for power first, Ignition on
  • Left side female controls 1st speed jump them and see if fan works.
  • Right side female controls 2nd speed jump them and see if fan works.
  • If your fan works replace the Temp switch if not. and you do have power check out the fans.
  • if you don't have power chase the wires back looking for a broken, burnt or pinched line.

P1491 is for the cooling fan relay control circuit as you've found already.Start by checking the fuse for the fan relay. Its in the box under the hood, a 40 amp fuse.If you've got a couple jumper wires, you can unplug the fan connector and carefully jump the fan to see if it works. The fan connector is on the right side of the back of the fan shroud. Unplug it and jump the black wire to ground and the green to positive. You've got to be very careful doing this though-you are in very tight quarters, its not hard for your jumper wires to touch each other in the connector and short together, and if you use small diameter jumper wires they will get hot quickly when the fan comes on.If the fan doesn't come on when you jump it, or if it runs slow or sounds bad, you've got a bad motor and will need to replace the fan assembly. One thing that does happen somewhat often, is a bad fan motor will burn up the relay. If the fan motor is drawing too much current it will overload the relay and burn it up. This is why its so important that if the fan motor runs slow or makes noise that you replace it, or you may end up burning up relays frequently.If the fan runs and the fuse is good, its very likely you just need a fan relay. This is a pulse width modulated relay, not the on/off clicker type you'd find in the fuse box. This unit is capable of infinite speed control. It gets very hot in operation, so its mounted to the body sheet metal to allow heat to dissipate through the sheet metal. The relay is mounted under the right headlamp held down with two 8mm screws. To get to it you have to remove the front bumper cover and headlamp bracketry to access the relay. These relays are pretty common.

Check and test this possible causes:
radiator fan ctrl rly circuit wire harn intermittent defect
radiator fan ctrl rly circuit wire harn observable defect
radiator fan relay ground circuit open
rad fan relay control circuit open
radiator fan relay control circuit short to ground
rad fan control relay defective
PCM defective

Have 97 honda accord 2.7 i've done everything, relays, fuses, temp sensors, radiator, jumped the fans with direct wire to battery, work fine, tried to run ac see what it would do but nothing ar all...


i am confused you have not mentioned your problem but it sounds like your engine cooling fan is not working? if so try replacing the cooling temp sending unit located on or near the thermostat housing. in fact disconnect it while engine is running and it should turn fan on in a few seconds.goodluck

Over heating


check the coolant level,thermostat may need replacing(stuck closed),the cooling fans may not be working,try jumping the electrical prongs on the cooling fan motor with the connector unhooked.it should run if not then the fan motor will need replacing,it could also be a head gasket problem you can have a block test on the cooling system to check this out.

Took thermostat out but still runs hot after 30 miles. It is a 1993 saturn sl1


Do a presure test on the radiator cap. The radiator cooling fan should be coming on regardless of heat up so listen for it to come on. If it isn't coming on, you need to unplug the coolant sensor by the top radiator hose at the engine block, then with key on, engine off, take a paper click and jump the connector in your hand. The fan should start at this point. If it doesn't you need to jump the fan with jumper wires from the battery by uplugging the connector at the fan and see if it will run. If it doesn't, you need to replace the fan. If all of this is working you need to have a presure test done on the cylinders by pulling all of the plugs. The pressures should be the same. If 2 cylinders beside each other is low, you most likely have a blown head gasket that will need to be replaced. Make sure you do the other test first and make sure that the radiator cap is sealing correctly.

My 98 neon is over heating and i know why, its the fans, their not working but the question is "why aren't they working ?" the fuses are find (they've been tested ) is it the fan motor? i was told that...


When trying to trouble shoot any automobile electrical system, you have to be aware of all components and their locations. A wiring diagram of your cooling system will provide you with this information. Once you have it you can use this diagram to test the fan itself, relay and controllers by jumping them directly to the battery. If those components are fine you can test the coolant sensor which tells the fans when to turn on. Work your way thru the system from the fans back to the begining of the circuit.

I have a 2005 Dodge caravan and the engine fan in front of the radiatior is not working. Already replaced the fan. What would you suggest?


Replace the coolant sensor,it turns the fan on when the temp gets to the 218 degree mark,and then it cuts it off.Make sure there is no air in the cooling system,if there is bleed it out.Check for a blown fuse also,and see if the fan will come on with the defrost,or ac,it should come on automatic if the ac is turned on,or defrost,if it does,replace the coolant sensor
