Question about 2001 Dodge Caravan

3 Answers

I have a 2001 dodge caravan with o/d trans. it has P0733 and P0734 code also did have a p1781 code. I have replaced both speed sensors and nothing changed. I eventually swapped solenoid pack from a 91 dodge van and the gear ratio codes came back but my P1781 code did not. Also when I pulled the solenoid pack out I noticed a screen from pack crushed between trans and solenoid pack

I am now only getting A PO733 code besides the P0700 which I know is telling me tcm prob. I only have a basic scan tool and no ohm meter or anything like that. I do not understand what u mean by the pin out that u were showing me. I do have a pin out for the solenoid pack though.

  • thomleyt Oct 03, 2010

I dont know what ground u mentioned? And if u didnt get my last post I only now have a P0733 code. and no I dont like just throwing parts on a car. the codes usually are a speed sensor prob. so I had some and put them on I also new that the solenoid pack was used so I went ahead and replaced it not really a diag just passed experience that I was leaning on.

2001 dodge caravan I have a P0733 code and I an stuck my wiring visibly looks good. I had a Po734 and P1781(tcc code) I pulled my solenoid pack and found a screen from it crushed between the pack and trans I put a used from a 91 trans. in it I have replaced the input and output speed sensors both used from the 91 trans. and now I only but also still have the P0733 code 3rd gear ratio etc... It gets upto about 3,000 r.p.m. and drops to about 2,500 and then goes back to the 3,000 it is trying to shift it seems but wont. I also replaced trans fluid and filter but didnt use atf4 thinking clogged filter.

please help with my 2001 dodge minivan problem

  • thomleyt Oct 03, 2010

You do not think it will be replacing or rebuilding a transmission? I am scared that is what I am looking at.

  • Mario M Aug 07, 2012

Thats because a 1991 solenoid pack is NOT meant to go into a 2001, there were changes.

If fluid is replaced and everything else checked then more likely looking at replacing the valve body. if a servo/soleniod is sticking then it could set that code.

Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation

What about the vacumn pipe from the inlet manifold to the gearbox ?? does it have one ?? if so check it out because if it has and the pipes perished it will not change gear

P0733, Improper Ratio for Third Gear.
P0734, Improper Ratio for Fourth Gear.

I don't like throwing parts at a problem so lets check the wiring first:
solenoid pressure tcm
switch assem. pin pin
1 47
2 50
3 9
4 trans relay output (30 or 87) in power box (30='02, 87='98+)
5 59
6 60
7 20
8 19

If you examine the plugs you should find the pin numbers embossed on one side or the other, and if not let me know.
There are no connections between the assem. and the pcm
The output sensor wires: pin 1 to pin 13 and pin 2 pin 14 at tcm.

Also yes, the test are continuity or 0 ohm resistance measurements. Also check out the ground that I mentioned last time. I doubt that the speed sensor alone will solve the other codes that involve the assembly, so I wouldn't replace that until the assembly is ironed out.

PS. All these interconnects are from the '02 manual.

keep us uodated.

I have a 1998 dodge Grand Caravan with codes P0700,P0734 & P0733. What does this mean?

P0700 is a informative transmission code, about some problem there; the P0733 and P0734 is the specific problem there.
I would first try changing the fluid and filter. Although the fluid may look like it is brand new, with 100K on the fluid, I can assure you that even if those miles were all highway at steady speed and no load that the fluid has deteriorated and no longer lubricating the internal parts properly and that there is some debris in the ******.If codes return and shifting problems are still present, there is definite internal failure, possibly the pump or in the clutches.
DTC P0733The powertrain control module (PCM) uses the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor, input speed sensor (ISS) and output speed sensor (OSS) to determine engine speed, input shaft speed and output shaft speed. These sensor readings are used to determine the current gear ratio and RPM slip across the torque converter. The PCM uses this information from the sensors to determine if the commanded gear matches the actual gear. During normal driving conditions, the PCM will adapt main line pressure via the pressure control (PC) solenoid to prevent slipping and harsh shifts. Shift solenoid 3 is used to apply or release third gear clutch. The PCM controls 3rd gear by controlling the ground for shift solenoid 3. The PCM will turn the solenoid OFF, open the driver circuit, when 3rd gear is commanded On to apply 3rd clutch. Shift solenoid 3 is supplied ignition voltage from the fuel pump relay whenever the PCM commands the fuel pump relay ON. DTC P0733 sets when 3rd clutch still slips after the PCM has commanded high main line pressure.DTC Parameters
DTC P0733 will set if the PCM detects an incorrect actual 3rd gear ratio when 3rd gear is commanded On when:- The condition exists for longer than 3 seconds (2001)*- The condition exists for longer than 3 seconds, 1 minute is allowed to elapse, then condition exists again for longer than 3 seconds (2000)- The high main line pressure has been commanded- The transaxle is in a forward gear- The input speed is greater than 224 RPM- The vehicle speed is greater than 5 km/h (3 mph)- The speed noise parameter = NO- The steady state ratio fail counter equals 255 for an in-gear failure, or the shift fail counter is greater than 100 on a downshift or upshift to 3rd gear (128=0 or normal operation)DTC P0733 diagnostic runs continuously once the above conditions have been met.
DTC P0733 is a type A DTC for 2000, type B for 2001.**Applicable to vehicles built after June 2000.
Diagnostic AidsImportant: If DTCs P0745, P0746, P0756, P0758, P0761, P0763, P0766, P0768 or P0789 is set, diagnose that DTC first. A diagnosed PC solenoid, shift solenoid 2, 3 or 4 low/high circuit fault DTC may have caused DTC P0733 to set.Important: If a shift solenoid performance DTC P0783, 4th gear stuck ON, is set, diagnose that DTC first. A 4th gear stuck ON may cause no 3rd gear, no 2nd gear, or TCC stuck Off.
Refer to Pressure Ports - Air Check and Parts Description for pressure apply points and for component/location description.
Possible causes of no 3rd gear are listed in the flowchart on the succeeding page.
Verify TRANSMISSION ISS and TRANSMISSION OSS read correctly on Scan tool.
Make sure the pressure control, shift 2, shift 3 and shift 4 solenoids are not intermittently sticking. A sticking shift solenoid 4 may cause 4th gear to be applied from an initial start resulting in no 3rd gear. Audible sound should be similar for all solenoids. A muffled tone indicates the need for replacement.
Check this pinout HERE
P0734 refer at ratio 4 gear, and the rocedure is the same.
Hope helps.

Only code p0734 2001 caravan

Hi there:
This code means that the transmission is slipping in high gear and the TCM (TRansmission Control Mocule) logic thinks it has incorrect ratio since it monitors input and output speed. Keep in mind that TCM uses input from the input speed sensor and output speed sensor to determine gear ratios. The TCM then compares the known gear ratio to the calculated gear ratio for the current range.

Check HERE test procedure.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

What does these codes mean P1781, P0731, P1784 AND P0700 AND HOW DO I FIX THEM.

p1781 is manufacturer control transmission, p0731 is gear 1 ratio incorrect, p1784 is manufacturer control transmission, p0700 is trans, control system malfunction. all of these codes refer to tranny. This code normally points to a faulty transmission control module, but this is an expensive part and you should have an experienced Dodge technician diagnose the problem first. or a transmission specialist. the other codes are probably associated with the p0700 code. have a good day !

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't shift out of first gear and the fault codes are P0733 and P0734.

P0733=Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio
P0734=Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio,
your transmission is in "limp" mode,
Have the following sensors checked on the transmission, input sensor, output sensor, and speed sensor.
The transmission is not getting a signal from one of them,So it doesn't know how fast your going so it doesn't up shift.

Chrysler Neon auto gearbox problems

P0733 IS GEAR RATIO ERROR IN 3RD AND P0734 IS GEAR RATIO ERROR IN 4TH..THESE CODES USUALLY MEAN AN INTERNAL PROBLEM IN TRANSMISSION,BUT CHECK WIRES AT SPEED SENSOR CONNECTORS FOR BROKEN WIRES BY PULLING ON WIRES AND WIRING NEAR SOLENOID PACK FOR CHAFING..I HOPE THIS HELPS..YOU MIGHT WANT TO DROP THE TRANS PAN AND LOOK FOR A PLUGGED FILTER OR DEBRIS IN PAN..MAKE SURE THE TRANS COOLER IN RAD HAS NOT FAILED ALSO

Transmission codes:

I WOULD TRY REPLACING THE INPUT SPEED SENSOR..A DEFECTIVE SPEED SENSOR CAN CAUSE ALL OF THESE FAULTS..IT IS LOCATED IN FRONT OF TRANS ABOVE SOLENOID PACK..IT IS THE ONE CLOSEST TO THE ENGINE..IT SCREWS INTO TO TRANSMISSION..A 1 INCH SOCKET FITS IT..ALSO CHECK WIRING TO BOTH SPEED SENSORS..A SENSOR IS ABOUT 35 BUCKS,AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL DODGE DEALER..GET A NEW ONE AND YOU'LL SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE..FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM..HAVE REPLACED LOTS OF THEM
