Question about 1993 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

I had recently had my engin redone VW Jetta 3 CL 1993 model, and when i got it back it was working perfectly, starting fine. 2weeks about after one moring off to work the car started fine but on going home the afternoon the car would not start we had to kick start it. I took it back to the guy and asked what could be wrong as it started perfectly that morning but he immeadtly said it could be the battery. So i had a guy come to test it but im not sure if he was just trying to sell me a battery. Although the engin by short cutting it starts up fine. What could it be, starter motor, altinator, or the battery. Rozanne

    Thanks for the reply,
    1) The engine does not turn at all but battery is still charged
    2) Solinoid and life to starter
    3)Yes, as above

Before it was repaired, there were problems with the starting initially.
But after it was fixed it started fine. but rearly would struggle to take. Between now and then it was definatly easier to start no noises or anything.

Hi Rozanne, It could be a bad connection on the main cable from the battery to the starter motor. I'll need some more details from you though. 1) When you crank the engine is there a clicking sound comming from under the hood? 2) What do you mean by 'short cutting' it. 3) Is the starter turning when you try it on the cars own battery? Can you let me know all the different symptoms the vehicle has from when it worked well and the difference between now and then. Regards Johngee

  • Have the starter motor checked and also the electrical connections to it. I think it would be advisable to check the starter relay. If the hard start persists after having those units checked. I think it would be a good idea to have the starter motor checked with a load test. The starter must be placed under load to see if it turns in that condition. If it fails that will mean replacing either the brushes or bushes. I think maybe you'll need some auto electricians help for that. If we're talking about a diesel engine the problem with it failing to take, will probably be related to a problem with the filter housing pump ( thats the unit which houses the fuel filter) and has primer on top. It looks like a large button which can be pushed down and it returns on its own. If its soft while the engine is cranked, try pumping as someone starts with the key. the second possibillity is that the injector pum is defective and may need repair, servicing and callibiration.
This may not have been done at the time the engine was rehabilitated. Expect the head and rotor to have become worn. its always better to have the injectors serviced at the same time as the pump. The two problems you have are seperate and would not have been carried out with the enginework.
Let me know what happens. Regards Johngee

My 1998 VW Jetta TDI (230,000 miles) recently developed cold starting problems. I replaced the glow plugs with no change in starting performance. The problem seemed to start when an oil change tech put...

sluggish/cold start "problems"with any VW group product can be put down,in a lot of cases,to dirty injector nozzles, use redexe/wynns injector cleaner at 1 can to 1/2 tank fuel and you will feel a difference.as for the oil,VW group, use 10/40 semi synthetic in ALL their engines.(except w12 0/40)using a thin oil would pass the rings/valve guides and cause a carbon buildup inside the chamber......try it and see.....

I have a 2000 VW Jetta and the trans fluid just leaked out!

if you can do it yourself get under the car and make sure that the pan bolts are tight if they are look for any hoses going to and from trans make sure that they are all connected and tight even though the fluid never has to be changed there is still a fill tube make sure that the end of the tube that goes into the tranny is secure and tight being that you had alot of engine work done its possible that one or all of these things could be wrong could have inadverntenly loosened it up and forgot to retighten. hope this at least gives you a starting point.

VW transporter power problem

Hi nick. I have a T5 04 model and recently had the same problem. i was told it was a blown turbo so i had a friend look at it and turbo was fine. got vw to run a diagnostics and it had a broken wire running from the charge pressure meter. replaced for 9 euro. 3 weeks later same problem and it turned out to be a loose plug on the air mass meter. now its perfect again. apparently what happens is that if the engin management is getting a wrong reading from the pressure meter it limits the van to 40 horse power for fear of blowing the engine. whenever i switched the van off and back on the problem would fix itself but as time went on it got worse until complete failure. the wire is located under the coolant resivoir. dont know exactly where though. email me on paulblackpb@gmail.com if you need to know more. if it does turn out to be the turbo (which i doubt) then there is a website called CRTurbos that seem to be the cheapest around. but i seen another forum where the turbos were replaced and the problem remained. I suggest first look at the charge pressure meter.

the glow plugs probably need replacing, it seems they are not heating up the gas enough.
