Underneath on the back of the transfer case is the 4wd control motor. Test it to see if it is working.

1996 Toyota Hilux Surf hubs and diff erratically engaging and disengaging

Based on what you wrote about sitting for a week, my first thought is the battery. Does the truck start?

Next, do you get an error code with OBD2? I have a 97 4Runner that had a similar problem shifting into and out of overdrive. It was an electrical relay inside the tranny.

My thought is that if the battery is low perhaps a similar relay is trying to engage or disengage 4x4. Or that relay is just bad.

Could also be the 4X4 switch itself.

I have a 1998 f 150 4x4 and four wheel drive wont engage no lights either

Have an assistant, lie SAFELY under the truck with a small hammer and GENTLY tap the motor on the 4X4 unit while you engage and disengage the 4X4 switch. Key on engine off in Park with foot brake set and brake pedal depressed.

Will not ingage in 4x4 lights not on ,on 4x4 switch

The first thing to do is check for blown fuses. If the switch is functioning, you should hear a click when you push the 4x4 button. The no lights on could be burned out bulbs,(there are 3 of them on the switch). If there is no click, then you need to remove the switch from the dash and check the wiring connections. Just use a small screwdriver to pop the switch out. If the connections check out and there are no blown fuses, then you probably need a new switch. If you are getting a clicking sound when you push the button, but no 4x4 engagement, look for a problem with the vacuum lines. Mine had a disconnected vacuum line tht was hidden beneath the battery. I had to take the battery out and remove the battery tray to check it. Also, check the line that runs from there to the font axle. Both of those connections are notorious for coming loose, and that's the one that engages the front drive axle going to the right front wheel. Let me know what you find.

I have Ford Ranger Supercab 2001. The 4wd does not engage.. clicking sounds from under the dash board. Please help :)

When you turn the dial to 4 wheel drive it controls a solonoid unit that then controls the electric motor that shifts the trasfer case to 4X4. The clicking sound that you are hearing is probobly the solonoid unit (4x4 control unit) engaging or trying to engage the trasfer case motor. From what I,ve heard the solonoid unit is located behind the plastic panel that is under the glove box and before the passenger side door. Moisture can build up in that area and ruin the solinoid unit over time. Check any fuses that have any thing to do with the 4x4. If the solonoid unit or fuses is not the problem, I would check the wireing to the electric transfer case motor and the motor itself. Good luck and God bless!

You can check to see if there is a relay or maxi fuse in the engine compartment. The circuits/solenoids are known to go out alot in these in the fords.

I would replace the 4 x 4 actuating switch located top rear of transfer case. The switch has a 2 wire harness hooked to it. The same thing happened to mine. Cost me $80.00 and 30 minutes.

2002 grand vitara v6, will not engage 4x4, (no front axle activity) no activity light, tried 4-hi, and 4-lo, switches on t-case show shift rail activity, dont have a schematic to trace diff pump behind...

I had the same problem on Fraser Island over the Australia Day weekend. The problem was the rubber vacuum hose connected the front diff. There is a metal pipe than comes from the vacuum pump and along the lower engine cross member facing the front of the car. In my case the sand had dislodged the pipe which it turned dislodged the rubber vacuum hose connected from the pipe to the rear top of the front diff housing. This hose engages the front diff / hubs - if they don't engage the 4x4 green light won't come on. After reconnecting the rubber hose everything worked perfectly.

Hope this helps.
Cheers
