have you checked your crank position and cam position sensors?

  • my_daddys_ga Oct 03, 2010

i checked all fuses and relays and they are all good thats why i pulled the pump and i thought i'd check it anyway and it was good

  • my_daddys_ga Oct 03, 2010

if it was the crank or cam sensors it wouldn't start by spaying starter fluid it would it

There is a fuel pump relay under the hood - start there. there are some tests you can do to see if the relay is bad. One way is to jumper a wire from the positive side of the battery to the wire that goes to the pump from the relay socket and see if the pump runs. Then with a volt meter, you can check if there is voltage on the input side of the relay as well as the relay coil, and if there is a ground on the relay coil side when cranking the engine- this is the side that the computer uses to control the pump, by completing the ground. Then check all your fuses. More than likely it's your fuel pump relay. $8-$25 at your parts store.

If you checked the relay then its a simple fix - find the break in the wires feeding from the relay to the fuel pump! because - if you did check them like I suggested, then thats where the issue is. If not, go back and check again - one thing at a time the way I suggested. You will find the problem. I apologize for pczaps comment - it was NOT helpful, nor kind, nor cooperative. I do not know who this guy is. Take Care.

You did that the hard way
If you had a wiring diagram, you could have started anywhere in the fuel system, checking as you went, until you had no voltage drop.
You could also have found a place, to put power to the pump, without removing the tank
There is a fuse, relay in most cases, fuel pressure regulator, etc in all vehicles. Have to know where and what to test.
Your working blind with no print of a system, your not knowlegable of.

pczap made one good point - you should have a wiring schematic at minimum and diagnostic flow charts to aid you in finding the problem, and how to fix it - working on anything blind can cause worse problems. But, then, thats what shops are for, right? you can go to and buy a 1 year subscription to your vehicles Factory service manual, including up to date TSB (Technical Service Bulletins) of vehicle specific issues. The fee is $15 I believe. Mitchell1 has a service like that too, much more expensive though (Ondemand5). Good luck.

I would say tip bed up, as your dealing with too much rust

You leave rear bolts in place & loosen

I have a 1996 5.7 yukon that is spuddering while foot is in the gas at any speed. no check engine light. replaced plugs, wires, pvc, vac lines, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injector with new style...

It could be the timing chain or belt slipping from being worn out. Although another thought check to see if the throttle positioning sensor is bad. My truck did the same thing last year and replace TPS and runs like new. (mine didn't give chk eng light either)

How to change fuel pump on a 1996 s-10 blazer?

2 door or 4 door. Either way you're going to have to drop the tank. The 4 door is a little easier and can be done with it flat on the ground. The 2 door had a rear tank and the bolts have a tendency to become a little more rusted. Remove the skid plate under the tank if it's still there. Follow the wires to the frame rail and unplug the plug. Unhook the fuel lines, and drop the tank (helps if it's low on fuel). Spin the ring that holds the sending unit in place and remove it.

Thought the fuel pump was bad, engine died but after hitting tank with mallet it started up and ran. replace fuel filter. started and ran a few min then died wouldnt start up. replace fuel relay still wont...

If you hit the tank and it ran? The fuel pump is bad. By striking the tank you jarred the pump, causing what mechanics call "The last ride" Peice of sound advise, Replace with ac delco pump. The zone pumps go out usaly within months if not days

Will not start after running out of gas. how do i reset after clearing filter and can i bypass filter?

you can't reset, no you can not bypass the filter, it will throw off a check engin light becuase there is a certin pressure reading the fuel must present to the ECU. you gonna have to replace your fuel pump assembly. you should be able to remove your back seat, and a metal panel held by 4-6 scres is located right under the seat. Undo that and you have your fuel pump access. if you can't replace it like that, your gonna have to drop your fuel tank (empty it first) by using a floor jack and a peice of wood to drop your tank. remove the pump assembly carefully and make sure you have the Rail, the pump unit (its a cylider), and the filter on the bottom of the pump, if the filter is missing, fish it out of the tank. Now your best bet is to buy a whole new rail, but if that is not an option, buy the pump, pump filter (not the in-line filter), and wiring harness. If you do not replace that wiring harness expect to burn your fuel pump out, again. unfortunatly any GM and Chrysler vehcle that runs out of gas immediatly burns that fuel pump up.

1996 gmc yukon. replaced fuel pump 3 times in 2 months, finally running then it wouldnt start one day. cranked it over for awhile and nothing. sat 15 min it started right up, drove home shut off, then...

this is a very common problem. GM has issued a service bulletin to replace the wiring connector at the fuel pump assembly on top of the tank. check the end of the plug for burnt terminals. the service bulletin states that these corroded connectors cause a voltage drop that results in repeated pump failures.
