Sounds like you have a failing transmission to this 35 year repair technician. Have you even run the fault codes with a scan tool?

Loss of power, struggling up inclines, and thumping sound that sounds like air being beaten by a helicopter

Lifter or valves could have gotten stuck due to the lack of oil which could have not reached lifters, push rods, and or valves. It is possible to to free stuck the lifter or valve but more than likely they need to be replaced.

if i remember correctly ,, the computer drops a few cylinders while cruising to save fuel and this turns off when you step on the gas again ,, so there may be nothing wrong with your truck

My 84 caprice classic it has a very shakie idle

When you start your car, you step on the gas and turn the key, you have set the high idle feature on the carb as part of the warmup sequence. When you step on the gas again, you kick high idle off ...if premature, the engine is cold and it runs ruff, and wikll likely stall under some circumstances until you have reached operating temp. The reason for the ruffness ...is gasoline becomes 'gas' better when the engine is at operating temp than when the engine is cold.

Your battery is getting tired. When you step on the gas and the lights get brighter, it is because you are running the alternator at a higher speed and you are making more electricity which the lights are more than happy to gobble up.

Keep in mind your car is notonly a Caprice Classic ... it is a classic, 26 year old vehicle. It needs a little more TLC than a newer model.

Lack of power

is the trans fluid level ok? check the color of the fluid, should be a nice cherry red color, and notice the smell of the fluid. if it smells burnt, or like the smell of burned brakes. if you have the bad smell, the clutches are burning, time to rebuild.
