Question about 1998 Ford Taurus

2 Answers

I installed a Transmission from a 2000 Windstar into my 1998 Taurus. It shifts forward and reverse fine. Can I put the VSS from my 1998 Ford Taurus AX4S into the transmission from a 2000 Ford Windstar AX4S and will it report correctly to the PCM? I know the gear range might be different, but could care less. The transmission from the Windstar has a cover over where the VSS goes. Is the plastic gear still on the output shaft of the Windstar AX4S for the VSS? The Windstar AX4S also has another connector coming out of the top. Does this control any shift points internally or just send a signal to the PCM and what is it called? Can I just change the connector to plug into this, and if so, will it report correctly to the PCM for shift points or is the sine wave output different? Please, only answer if you are a mechanic that knows how to make things work, not a change-ineer that can only replace parts from what the Hollander book tells you. I apologize to the real mechanics, but I had an over rev problem that was just a bent throttle cable assembly, the "expert" would have had me spend a way to much $ to buy computers to read codes when all it took was some common sense.

The tranny will not work. You can't convert vss gear driven signal to oss signal. The PCM will read it different. The gear driven vss is 8000 pulses per mile and the oss is 32000 pulses per mile. In lay man terms.. the speedometer will the the PCM the car is going 110 mph when your really only going 20mph. The limited will kick in and the car will start to shut down. There is no gear in the transmission to drive the vss. However, if you have no other options but to use the transmission... Hummingbird electronics offers a pulse generator that can convert the vss to oss for $125 dollars. You can also buy a limited from radio shack to limit the pulses from 32000 to 8000. It won't help the speedometer and it won't read right but at least the.car won't shut down on ya. I hope I helped.

WELL VAN TRANSMISSION IN CAR CAN BE THE SAME TRANSMISSION BUT HOOK UPS MIGHT BE DIFFERENT.THE PCM KNOWS IT NOT RIGHTS TRANSMISSION.BECAUSE 1998 TO 2000 TRANSMISSION CONTROL CIRCUIT AND SHIFT CIRCUIT CAN BE DIFFERENT THATS WHEN YOU HAVE SHIFT PROBLEMS.YOU SHOULD HAVE PLASTIC GEAR INSIDE OUTPUT SHAFT.YOU SHOULD SEE TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR WIRES AND WIRES FOR TORQUE CONVERTER AND SHIFT CONTROL VALVES.YOU CAN TRY HOOK IT UP BUT PCM GOING TO GIVE YOU PROBLEMS.

Has the transmission ever had any services done? Its possible it has just gone out. There are clutches and bands inside and without proper service they will go out.

Will a transmission #ax4s from 1988 ford windstar fit a 200 windstar with transmission # ax4s

I dont think that will work ....1988 was aod and aode trans

The AXOD-E was renamed AX4S in 1993. In addition to the name change, improvements in the lubrication of the gearset and capacity upgrades were made. A centrifugal piston assembly was implemented in the intermediate clutch position to improve 1st-2nd and 2nd-1st shift quality and an increase in the clutch's durability was made on some models. High energy friction materials were also introduced. A new twin piston torque converter clutch (TCC) was introduced with the AX4S and the AX4N on some models. The transaxle pan on this model will sometimes read "AXOD Metric" since it's based on the AXOD transaxle. The data plate code for this transmission is "L."
Applications:
The Ford AX4S automatic transmission is a four-speed electronic overdrive transmission used in 1995 to 2000 Ford Windstar minivan. The transmission is also used in 1991 to 2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable, and 1993 to 1995 Ford Taurus SHO models. The AX4S is a second-generation version of the AXOD and AXOD-E transmissions used in 1986 to 1991 Ford Taurus.

98 Ford Taurus shuts off when shifted into gear.

its in the timing ...whenever you start it it sits and idles fine but when you go to put it in gear it dies...the timing needs to be repaired. its a guaranteed solution.
