What would cause a 1990 Ford ranger to fire but not start?

Check to be sure you are getting fuel to the fuel rail. The fuel filter could be stopped up. Also I would check the nertia switch to be sure it has gotten turned off. This switch is the fuel shut off switch.

The evaporative system failed on emissions for my 87 Ford Ranger 2.9l engine, any suggestions what might be wrong

It can't be filled up because it leaks, or won't take anymore gas? Check the hose from the fuel filler to the tank for kinks or restrictions, if you have leaks, fill it up and trace the leak. Either problem will cause EVAP codes, hard starts, and cause vehicle to die.

I have a 87 ford ranger 2.9 4+4 replaced both fuel pumps and fuel pump regulator when it sits for over night it looses fuel psi so when i start it in the morning it acts like it has no fuel but after a...

Without seeing it it is a hard thing to diagnose. You could have an injector leaking, possibly a fuel line. Do you smell gas? Sometimes with fords around the fuel filter leaks because of a broken clamp. The o rings around the fuel injectors could be leaking, or one of the rubber fuel lines. If you go off road alot, you could have a pin hole in one of the rubber or metal lines. Check and get back with me and I will do the best I can to help. Hope tis helps.

I have an 87 ford ranger xlt 2.9. I just replaced both fuel pumps and now i went from 18mpg to 6.5 mpg. Can anyone tell me what could cause this.

somethings leaking, probably one of the hoses you disconnected at the fuel tank. as the 2nd fuel pump is in the fuel line and much easier to get to. that kind of drop in mileage would have to be a leak.

I have an 87 ford ranger that hasn't been started in about ten years. It still cranks over but wont start. My thought is to drain the gas and put new in, is there anything else I can try?

the gas goes bad in one year (this comes from the American institute of petroleum), the fuel injectors are most likely damaged and the electric fuel pump and filter will most likely need to be replaced before it will start. so drain all the fuel put in at least 5 gallons of clean fuel, add one can of BERRYMANS CHEMTOOL and hope for the fuel pump to work and the injectors clean themselves out

I have a 87 ford ranger and i put a fuel pump in the tank and drove about a mile and died.Has gas to the engine. will only run if sprayed down the throttle body. Its a 2.9, any thoughts on problem. Thank

there are 2 fuel pumps, a low pressure in the tank and a high pressure on the frame rail. the high pressure pump is probably bad. Check your relay and inertia/cut off switch first.

Ranger fuel problem

There is a fuel cutoff switch on the passengerside floorboard, towards the right kick pannel, there will be a little red button on top of it, check to see if that is tripped, also when you turn the key to the on position listen to see if you hear the fuel pump prime up, just a short buzzing noise from the underside of the cab, if you dont hear it, that is a good indicator that your fuel pump maybe bad, i would also check the pressure at the fuel rail, chrome or black colored bar located near the fuel injectors.
