Do you know the gasket number or where i can get one? I am pretty adept at putting in gaskets etc so interested in the cost of it versus a used gear box.

There are seal kits you can purchase through either GM or any other parts store. The one most common would be the seal that seals around the shaft for the pitman arm. The seal kit will come with all other seals necessary for a re-seal. Double check and clean the unit with brake parts cleaner prior to buying anything to determine which area is at fault. If you need any other instructions or diagrams. The kit runs about $45.

Is the gear box leaking or the metal power steering line leaking. Yes you can repair these. Although it is quite a bit easier to go to the salvage yard and get a new gear box. A little cheaper to fix the gear box, but very hard to get the new gasket in without ruining it. A lot of times it is just the metal line leaking though.

The Internet, though, has a large number of web sites where
you can buy service manuals and schematics from bookstores,

There is water leaking from the manifold of my 1996 gmc 1500 sierra cbx 4.3

Bad news, sounds like blown head gasket. Good news, sounds as though the blowout is from water journal out to manifold and not into oil journal or cylinder. A Chiltons/Haynes repair manual that covers your vehicle year/make/model will take you step by step to repair it. Though for most people this is a rather daunting task and taking it to a reputable repair shop may be the best alternative.

I have a lot of play in the steering wheel

Provided as to wether or not your model has a steering damper (if smo, may likely need replacing) and the ball joints check good, it may be likely that you have a worn steering gear. Many types are adjustable or rebuildable.

Transmission wont shift into any forward gears or reverse gear on my 1996 gmc sierra 1500 4wd

4WD! the transfer case is not stuck in neutral is it? Fluid levels are good? Have you noticed a decrease in mileage or power prior to this problem? If no then time to take it in for service it sounds like. Transmission fluid is not consummed, so if it leaked out then you may be able to fill it up and get the leak fixed, if too late then its a rebuild on the tranny.

Strange noise!

My 2005 GMC 2500HD (8.1 lt) had the same problem. I just had an exhaust leak fixed today. The right front manifold bolts were broken and the manifold was warped. The repair was 6.5 hours labour plus gaskets, seals, bolts and the manifold machining (parts were $130 CDN).
