Question about 2002 Subaru Outback
They did not put all the required oil in!...if at all. Yes, that is bearing material and remnants of the oil pump. You should learn to do this yourself.

Sounds like they did not put oil back into the car after they drained it, or if they did not enough. you can try to break the engine free with a 1/2 breaker bar on the main pulley, but to be perfectly honest the engine will have to be replaced as it may have broke a piston, shaft, basically it totaled the engine. For some reason it your husband does get it to break free and run, I would trade it on another vehicle. Hope this Helped Tim

Yes it is bearings, rings, and part of the cylinder. If the oil pump went out the motor would lock up. The oil pump pumps oil throughout the motor. If the pump quits, it is just like running the engine without any oil at all. Without oil pressure then the motor would lock up because nothing in the engine would get any lubrication. Don't think it has anything to do with the oil and filter. Probably just a faulty oil pump. I have heard of Walmart not putting oil back in cars, and causing them to lock up. But if you had oil in the car, and it has metal shavings, then it is more than likely the oil pump just quit.
