I am assuming that when you say bottom at converter you are refering to the catalytic converter in the exhaust if the converter itself or the inlet area of the catalytic converter is starting to glow red from heat it is because the converter itself is plugged up (bad) and needs replaced. If catalytic converter is bad and not replaced will ruin ignition system components such as plugs plug wires and such as well as intake sensors. I hope I understood your question properly.

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. No, it shouldn't. It could be a fuel issue or a an ignition system issue. Check your fuel pressure and make sure it is correct. It could be a clogged fuel filter or bad fuel injector. It can also be in the ignition systems, such as plugs, coils, wires, distributor cap, ect. Your ignition module could be going bad but that would be checked last.

Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail on top of the engine it should read a minimum of 30 psi if any lower replace the fuel pump, also if you smell a gas odor and the fuel pressure regulator looks wet with gas replace the pressure regulator before the fuel pump. This sounds like a fuel delivery issue.

1999 Ford Taurus mechanical problem

Hello,
your problem appears to be the idle control motor located on the air intake manifold it is a small motor that goes bad quite often. Other items that can cause this is a bad /clogged air filter or a tune up (spark plugs and wires), or clogged fuel injectors. to clean the injectors you can buy a container of fuel system cleaner and pour it into the gas tank and as you drive it cleans the system.

Once the fuel system is cleaned via a tankful of cleaner & gas then the idle controller motor would be next on the list to be replaced.

Good Luck !
