Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

I have a 96 Chevy Cav. Looks like I have a fairly significant oil leak on the front side of the engine (belt side). It's losing approximately 1/2 quart of oil every 250-300 miles or so. It looks like it's more around the bottom of the engine than anywhere else (it's not a head gasket). It almost looks like it's around the oil pan, but I can't really tell. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the front seal is out. You may have to take the engine out of the car to fix it. It requires removing the harmonic balancer to get to the seal.

Okay, thanks. From all of the research I have done, it sounds like the engine can be left in the car to do this repair, but it takes a lift to get it done. I'm having trouble finding the correct seal from some parts dealers. I am having the clutch rebuilt on the car this week (it has a slave cylinder leak) and since I was taking the car in, I wanted to fix the oil leak. Should I replace the rear seal while I am at it? Where can I find the front seal, and what is the correct nomenclature for the part? Thanks in advance.

2004 chevy cav just had cracked radiator replaced with new one.. now small leak in front and tail pipe dripping water.

No, you should not worry. Tail pipe dripping isn't related to your radiator. It's common especially if your vehicle sits alot.

Small oil leak. You need to find the source of it. Use some good engine degreaser and clean it up. You should then be able to find where it's coming from as you fire it up and check around. I understand sometimes that's hard because things are packed in. How fast are you losing oil? Check the level on your dipstick.

Losing oil oil is on left side of car all over

I would check the front crank seal to see if it is leaking which it sounds like it is or the valve cover gaskets.
