It does sound like the timing belt. If it sounds like there's no compression when you crank it then it is timing chain. Not sure if that engine will bend valves or not when the belt breaks. Hopefully not

****, I just did some digging and it looks like your engine will bend intake valves when belt breaks while running. Sorry man, good luck

Yes, most likely. Take timing cover off to verify. Let us know if you need instructions.

Does it have timing belt or chain

Both the 1.8 and 2.5 have chains. After the xterria 2003 all nissans have chain camshaft drives. Last sedan with belt was the 1994 Maxima

Cars are like that. I think they like driving people crazy. I\'ve been driven crazy by my Sentra for three months now.
Has the fuel pressure been checked? I wonder if your fuel pressure regulator has failed (the diaphragm inside will rupture and suck extra gas in through the vacuum hose attached to the regulator-could be the cause of backfiring). Something to check, anyway.

What causes the 2002 nissan se r to backfire

Sounds like an ignition or timing problem.
Is the check engine light on ?
This engine uses a direct ignition system which means each cylinder has a coil on top of the spark plug. It could be as simple as worn out spark plugs.
If you had said the engine backfired and was hard to start, but no flooding, I would also look at low fuel pressure. But too much fuel causes flooding.
A faulty throttle position sensor could cause all of your symptoms, but it should set a trouble code and turn on the check engine light.
