The valve assembly has failed. This is a major malfunction, it will cost you well over $1000 to fix it.
Most likely the service had nothing to do with it, it has just failed from old age. Unless of course he has put the wrong oil or it hasn't tightened the bolts from the pan hard enough and you lost all the oil. The next mechanic will tell you what went wrong.

1997 buick park avenue won't move when put in reverse. Just happened all of a sudden. works in Drive.

You can check the fluid level in the transmission, but if it is at the proper level, your transmission needs to be serviced at a qualified shop.

Shifts hard into reverse

First check your fluid level when fluid is hot. If low add accordingly, also check the color of fluid, if it is black you most likely have some internal issues. If it is brown consider having the transmission service by a qualified technician, make sure you inform him/her about the delay in engagement. possible there might be an adjustment they can make to internal bands.

The car has an automatic transmission and all of a sudden i had no reverse had no slipping or nothing the drive gears work fine no slipping grinding nothing shifts through all gears just fine

It may just need servicing/adjusting.

Your reverse gear is actually first gear ... when you select reverse another 'cog' fits into the toothed wheels to change the direction of first gear ... to give you reverse...

It may be a sticky valve or just a bit of adjustment (workshop job..) that is required.

What you can try ..

Start the car ... move the lever through all the positions several times (foot on brake..). Keep your foot on the brake and then put it in reverse and rev the car. Hard!

Try doing it several times.

An auto transmission works on valves opening and closing. Reverse gear - in comparison with the forward gears - is seldom used. The reverse valve can 'stick'. Try forcing it to open ... frighten it ... but keep your foot on the brake...

Hey Dennis.
Opppsss.. was this transmission serviced regularly?..no, ok.. this is a common problem, you will need to take it to s QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL to get the trans rebuilt..
If you live near a local drag strip, go there, ask the drag race mechanics who the best transmission man there is?? There is always one or two the drag racers relay on.. I would trust him to get it done right (BEFORE I would trust a "chain" transmission store!!!!!)
I, personally, have had two transmissions do this.. one a 96 suburban and a 95 Silverado.(both inherited and never serviced).. I found the guy that did mine this same way.. GLAD I DID.. it was less $$$$ and great work!! If no drag strip.. ask the custom car guys...

All the sudden Reverse does not work at all. After driving forward only for a couple of weeks, Reverse reappeared. Transmission fluid is at normal level. The fluid appears is little brown, but not too bad....

Problem could have been an intermittent transmission electrical problem, computer needs to be scanned for an intermittent code, this is the first place to start. If no codes are found and transmission is currently working okay then unfortunately there is no way to check for problem further at this time unless it has a problem again.

Does it also hold first gear longer that it should and then shift right from 1st to 3rd? It sounds like you broke the sun shell in the transmission. The trans will need to replaced or rebuilt.

Reverse went out on 1978 Chevy pickup

Nothing. Also it will be much cheaper to find a used matching transmission with low (less than 80k miles) than having a shop rebuild the old one. In most cases the used transmission will far outlast the rebuilt one. Check on the web by Googling "used transmissions".

2002 lincoln wont go forward but goes in reverse

Start the engine and allow it to get to operating temperature.

Place the gear selector in Reverse, then slowly through all the forward gears, while holding the brake.

Replace the selector in Park, but leave the engine running.

Check the transmission fluid level.

If low, add fluid until level is correct, then repeat above procedure and check fluid level again to ensure that transmission is filled to proper level.

If level is correct, perform fluid/filter exchange. If problem persists, see qualified service technician for further diagnosis. Transmission damage will require overhaul to repair.

2000 Hyundai elantra transmission delay, reverse going

Did you check the transmission fluid level? If necessary, add fluid. However you probably have a more serious problem. Take the car to a qualified transmission mechanic.
