Hi, here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

2001 Ford Taurus has had tune up, new coil, new alternator. Still misfires ocassionally on steep hill and bucks ocassionally when starting off. Could it be fuel injector?


do you have any check engine light on ? have you changed your fuel filter ? if no visibile engine light is on go to autozone and have them check it anyway sometime check engine lights dont work
the only thing that controls spart is coil crankshaft positon sensor and camshaft postion sensor. you may have a clogged injector or fuel filter or you may also just have low fuel pressure you can rent a fuel pressure tester from autozone for 150.00 bucks you get it back as soon as you return the tool i hope this helps a little if so please leave me positive feed back thanks have a wonderful day

Good Evening, I ran across this a couple weeks ago. Needless to say it was something that did not even put up a check engine light. We ended up changing the camshaft position sensor (the electronic pickup in the distributor), we changed the crankshaft position sensor thinking that with the heat maybe there was a breakdown in the sensor and ended up changing the camshaft sensor and squared it all away. Camshaft and crankshaft sensors are common failures on these vehicles and will give you those symptoms. Camshaft sensor is fairly easy to change (right on top on side of head on drivers side)
Crankshaft sensor is buried on backside of engine way down on the bottom.

Computer says crankshaft sensor problem even after changed the sensor twice


if the car is driving fine, sometimes you need to have the computer reset. try taking off the battery cable to see if that helps before taking it anywhere.

Its not unusual for the crankshaft sensor to intermittanly fail. The crank sensors are not real expensive and are not extremely hard to change.
The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) is mounted into the engine block above the starter motor. Engine speed and crankshaft position are provided through the crankshaft position sensor. The sensor generates pulses that are the input sent to the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM interprets the sensor input to determine the crankshaft position. The PCM then uses this position, along with other inputs, to determine injector sequence and ignition timing. The sensor is a Hall effect device combined with an internal magnet. It is also sensitive to steel within a certain distance from it.

Crankshaft and Camshaft Position Sensors Camshaft Position Sensor Engine timing is determined from the relationship between the crankshaft and camshaft. This relationship is maintained by a timing chain or timing belt. The Engine Management System does not control engine timing but it does monitor the relative position and speed of these shafts by monitoring signals generated by sensors. The Engine Management System (EMS) uses signals generated by the camshaft position sensor to synchronize fuel injection to the valve sequence and for the on-board diagnostic procedure for misfire detection. The EMS energizes the injector at or near the time the intake valve opens. For misfire diagnosis, the EMS compares the number of camshaft sensor reference pulses and the number of crankshaft position sensor reference pulses received. If the EMS receives an incorrect number of pulses Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC’s) should be stored in the EMS.
If the camshaft position sensor or circuit is faulty most engines will start. Some engine management systems will then default to a pre-programmed injector firing sequence. All injectors may be energized simultaneously or all of the injectors on one bank may be energized at the same time. If the CMP data is required for misfire detection and reliable CMP data is not present misfire detection would probably be suspended.
Related Symptoms The following symptoms can be caused by an intermittent wiring connection or faulty signal to the EMS:
  • Extended crank time with a cold engine
  • Intermittent rough running
  • Unstable idle
  • Bucking
  • Hesitation
  • Stumble
  • Chuggle
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Stalling on acceleration
Crankshaft Position Sensor Engine speed is a very important input to the Engine Management System (EMS). Crankshaft speed and position are the basis for many calculations made by the computer. Crankshaft position values are transmitted to the computer by pickup coils also known as Permanent Magnet (P/M) generators, hall-effect sensors or optical sensors. The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) also known as engine speed sensor is located in close proximity to the crankshaft.
In addition the EMS uses minute variations in the CKP sensor data to determine engine misfire. The EMS uses this information in conjunction with the camshaft position sensor to perform misfire diagnostics.
Related Symptoms: No Start/Intermittent Start Condition – Can be caused by a faulty crankshaft position sensor due to loose connections, bad grounds, high resistance in the circuit, or opens in the circuit
