Question about 1997 Ford Ranger SuperCab

2 Answers

1997 Ford Ranger Super Cab 4.0 Engine shuts off and will not start for sometimes up to an hour. Gas pedal feels weak and the engine idle is weak and less than normal RPM. When it restarts, it can be good for a few minutes or about a half hour at best. Then we shut down again. Fuel filter and fuel pump has been replaced with no improvement. This truck has automatic transmission and 4x4.

I have a 2002 ford ranger. Three times in the last month, after running some errands, the pick-up will not start. If I wait 1-2 hours, it starts fine. The truck runs great with lots of power and no...

The next time it does this to you, try this:
Just barely press down on the accelerator pedal. Just enough that you can tell that the throttle plate is starting to open. (you can "feel" the slack come out of the throttle cable, then just a little more) hold the throttle in this position and crank the engine to see if it starts. If it starts, let go of the throttle and see if it dies. If this happens, you need to replace your Idle Air Control (IAC) solenoid.
Ford has had a lot of trouble with these and the problem tends to be worse after a "hot soak" ( sitting for a short time after shutting of a hot engine).

Please note that you must be careful to not open the throttle too far when trying this. This is because if you open it too far, the injectors will open up too much and cause the engine to not start because of flooding.

I have a 1996 ford ranger supercab and when i sont even have my foot on the gas it still idels between 25 and 30 mph and it also spudders sometimes

Don't do this with your truck in gear but if you can get the engine to drop down closer to a normal idle by tapping the accelerator pedal, it is probably just a case of dry linkage under the hood. Use a lubricating spray (no WD-40, it evaporates) on the linkage you see moving when the accelerator pedal is moved. A weak return spring can cause this too but is a less common problem.
