I have a 2007 jag VDP. I left the key in the ignition but in the off position. Now the car is DEAD. I can't even open the trunk manually to access the battery and check it. everything is SHUT DOWN! What do you suggest I can do to access the battery before calling service? John

Dear John:

Take your liscence plate off the back of the car, there are two pieces of black tape that hide slots in the trunk, CAREFULLY put a screwdriver in the righthand slot, angled to the left, CAREFULLY feel around, carefully pushing, and you will find the release mechanism. Push to the left. TRUNK WILL OPEN!!! Take your time, keep your head, it's hard to find. Doesn't take much preassure, you can really feel it move in there. Feel around, push srtraight across to the left, alomst in the centre of the liscence plate. We love our Vanden plas too.

Best regards, Moyers

How do you open trunk if battery is dead

Use your ignition key to unlock the boot (trunk) by inserting it into a small keyhole under the chrome lift on trunk lid. It took me a while to figure it out when I first purchased my jag.

My 2004 X-Type suddenly went into 'Limp Home Mode' displayed 'engine fault' and 'gearbox fault' After pulling off the road I shut off the engine and remove the key and wait about...

Having a restoration shop and running several newer Jaguars I have seen similar situations. Intermittent multiple errors such as these can be caused by a low battery (or corroded connections) that "fool the computers". Also had a '99 XJ8 VDP have exactly the same issues over several months. Issue was a manufacturing fault in the sensors on the throttle body that caused the "limp home" mode - usually in stop and go traffic. Jaguar had an inspection and recall on the throttle bodies but that vehicle had gone through 3 different Jaguar dealers for service and none looked at TSB/Recall or performed the necessary checks on the throttle body. Tried cleaning the throttle several times (per Jaguar TSBs) but no change. Had to replace throttle body & problem solved (over 30,000 miles since then). Recommend making sure all air connections to throttle are clean and open and cleaning the throttle area to see if that helps.

On newer Jaguars (and other Al bodied cars) similar problems occur when the "ground" connections to the body become poor (usually through corrosion but sometimes through collisions). Connections may look perfectly normal but have high resistance. Careful when working with the connections - the posts are usually very loosely fastened to the bodies. The engine quit on a 2005 XJ8 VDP when I turned the wipers on (fortunately I was driving slow in a parking lot) because one of the forward bulkhead ground connections was corroded (looked normal but separated from body when removing the wires to clean them).

Also there occur occasional funny intermittent issues with all newer Jags that seem to be untraceable and non-reproducable computer "glitches".Good luck.

1996 jag xjs , the battery is dead , I need to jump start it but the trunk won't open ,battery in the trunk , can it be jumped from under the hood ? and why won't the trunk open even with a key ?

The trunk latch is operated by a solenoid which it requires power to operate. since the batery is flat then it won't work. I'm not sure where the positive terminal is under the hood but you can connect the positive lead to the alternator wire terminal, and the negative lead can be connected any where on the engine.
Good luck......

your Ignition Switch is bad here is how to replace it
The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible. On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

  • Remove the ignition switch wiring harness.
  • Unbolt it from its position.
  • Bolt the new switch into position.
  • Attach the witing harness.

The idle speed control valve on my 96 Jag VDP was sticking in the open position causing a high idle in the 2,000 RPM range. I had to disconnect it, remove it and manually pull out the plunger to reseat it....

TAKE IT TO DEALERSHIP.THEY WILL ADJUST AND REPROGRAM IDLE TO LEARN.WHEN YOU BUY A NEW IDLE SPEED CONTROL VALVE THE PCM HAS TO REPROGRAM TO LEARN ITS NEW IDLE POSITION.

Engine light on, noisy idling, short coolant-2001 JAG VDP

Take the car to a specialist to check the timing chain tensioners, they are a known issue. I`d advise you to not use (or even start) the car till theyve been ruled out, the engine could be made scrap if the tensioners goes.

If it does need tensioners, get the later metal type ones fitted.

2007 Jaguar VDP

Hey John,

This is very common, because your battery is dead your remote isnt going to work. So what you have to do is look by the license plate light bulbs, their is a key hole wear you can insert you key and open the trunk to charge/ or jump start your battery
