2004 Freestar Limited minivan tailgait handle problem

The tailgate handle came off. Got it back on, but it looks like the spring is not in the right position. Any idea where it should go?

I have the same problem. When I tried to open the tailgate door, the handle came out in my hand. How do I get the door open? How do I repair the handle problem? Another example of Ford . . . Fix Or Repair Daily !

The handle just came off in my wife's hand when she tried to open it. She doesn't know her own strength, hehe. So I fixed it. Here is what I ended up doing. I had to take off the back panel to the rear tail gate. There are a few screws that have to be removed, but the panel pops off pretty easily. In the door locking mechanism there is a small spring that has an end that barely sits in a notch of another piece of metal. This is the sole mechanism that holds the door handle on, once you get in there, you sill understand what I am talking about. To me, it looked like the groove wore down over time and the spring came loose. So I filed the groove a little deeper, hooked it all back together and am hoping for the best. So far, so good, but we are treating the handle with great care.

Same deal. Handle pulled right out. Will take a look tonight. Appears that nothing broke, at least from looking at the handle currently in my hand. Hopefully this 'spring' hasn't sprung out and away.

I have a 2004 Ford Freestar SEL and I have the same problem. Additionally, I can't get the tailgate open as a result. Does anyone know how to get the tailgate open so I can repair the handle?

My handle came off my 04 Freestar last night as I tried to open the door. No unusual pressure, it just popped off in my hand. An earlier poster asked about opening the door without the handle - any answers? Can I repair the X*(%@ thing without opening the hatch? TIA.

Clarification re: same problem rear hatch handle came off. Tha hndle came off when I tried to open the door. Plastic handle simply pulled out of door. Nothing appears to be broken. Something appears to have come out of the two notches in the handle assembly. Thank you. rayb403

How did your handle come of on you? Were you just attempting to open the gate (same problem) or or did some thing else occur.

I have had the same problem with my 2005. I don't know how but my 7 year old keeps pulling it off and I took pictures so I know how to do it from now on. It's easy to do without affecting any vital parts, i.e., the spring.

You take the back panel off consisting of 2-9mm screws and 2-philips head screws. Careful pulling the bottom portion off not to rip off any posts.

Once inside there is a grey bar that runs from one side of where the handle belongs to the other. This is the part that has the spring on it. Insert your handle all the way in and once there pry gently the grey bar until its prongs are in place. The spring is located just around the area that is flat coming off the grey bar and has a noticable spot for it. Also, off of the grey bar is a black plastic tab that is supposed to hold the bar from shifting back and forth, but gives easily. So you don't encounter the problem again you might try to gently bend it back to original shape.

I just had the same problem and have the 100000 mile warranty and of course it is not covered - by the sounds of it - it should be a recall item

My rear tailgate will not lock- had an accident where a car smashed into me in the rear. the tailgate was replaced but did not realize the tailgate would not lock with key chain lock or manual lock from...

If this is an original equipment replacement part should work just like its predeceser before the accident. Just check that everything is wel connected and in place by removing the panels and take a look inside.

2004 freestar the tailgate is ceased and we know that the unlock and lock works but it is ceased so how can we open it

Hello, I think you best bet is to take a trip to a Salvage yard and find a tailgate. You are going to need part of the lock mechanism anyway and you can figure out how the panels come off by working on one at the Yard.

If you find a good matching panel in the Yard, you might buy it and just replace the original panel with a Salvaged panel. Then you could be as aggressive as needed to get into the tailgate cavity to move the lock rods. You may need an electric lock solenoid, too.

If the lock mechanism has an interior handle, someone may be able to crawl in the cargo area and manually open the lid.

I hope myy solution was very helpful to you.

Tailgate doesn't shut. I used to have to slam the tailgate real hard for it to lock, now it doesn't close at all

check the tailgate lock rods behind the handle. The bezel around the handle pops off, and the mechanism is behind there. The rods that go to each side of the tailgate may be stuck inward. A little wd-40 or lubricant should work them loose again

Can't open tailgait on 2002 Mitsubishi Montero.

I have the same problem with a 2001 Mitusbishi Montero XLS. Door handle is stuck and feels mushy when trying to open it. Is there a safety from the inside panel to open the cargo door? At this point, until its repaired, all I want to do is to be able to release the lock and open the door.

2004 Mercury Monterey tail gate handle came completely off. The left side's guide is in place, but the right side is retracted - hence can't just put it back in. Any ideas?

Open tail gate. Use the access square inside - pull cable to open tail gate. Remove interier panel - 2 bolts plus 2 screws (2 bolts on handle and 1 screw each side), pull remainder out of guide clips. Now have full access to locking mechanism. Identified a retaining spring had come loose sending guides to shift left (exterior point of view). Place hand in tail gate and move guides over and put spring in place to retain. verify it works and put back together. Handle is the trickiest part as the bolts have to go through the interior panel and afix to the metal tail gate.

2004 Freestar hatch will not unlock

There is a tendancy for the Triggers from the handle to Disengage internally to the Latch due to Wear and Tear, or sometimes Stressing the Mechanism when the Tailgate is Locked and someone forgot.
Gently unfasten the trim panels around the Tailgate, from the INSIDE, and if you THINK about the project, you will be able to release enough of this All in One piece enough to trip the triggers by hand, and open the Tailgate. Continue to unfasten the moulded grips, and remove the whole panel. This will then give you the access to fix the Release mechanism, mounted on the Tailgate inner body.
