Question about Chevrolet G20

1 Answer

1993 chevy van, G20 350-TBI injection. Stalled at a traffic light, thought I was out of gas, but was not. Started back up, soon as It dropped in gear, it died again, starts right back up, have to pump the accelerator constantly once in gear to get it home, could not go over 25mph or into high gear, it would die. Got it home, it starts right up, but once you put in gear with any type of load, it dies. I just changed the air idle valve on the Throttle body, fiqured that was the cause but did not help. I thought of the fuel pump, but my exp. with fuel pumps, when they go out, they go out, thats it, the engine will not start. This is not the case, it will start right up, idle fine, I can see gas squirting out of the injectors. But once you try to drive it, It will studder and shudder like its running out of fuel unless you pump the gas pedal, it will clear up for a split secend then act like its going to die, I don't have a way of checking the fuel pressure, so any advice on what to change?? I'm mech. inclined (machinist) and do most of my repairs, I don't have a scanner, but there is not a check engine light present. Please help! Need to use this van!

Have you scanned for fault codes? How about the Throttle position sensor, have you tested it?

This could be a number of things but i think that your problem sounds like a vacuum leak or an EGR problem. Try listening for leaks and try un-plugging the EGR solenoid valve one time.

SOURCE: Engine starts then dies

Probably MAF. Mass air flow sensor, or idle control system/ sensor.
I have actually heard of some people having this problem because of a faulty heat sending unit, which doesn't show up on scan, but i'm still betting on the MAF. Good luck, let me know what you find.

My van won't start after driving a short distance, it will start again after 3 to 5 minutes but then will act like it's going to stall while I'm driving. What's wrong?

Hi Greg, I'm AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair in St Charles Mo

Greg, I read your complete message, but nowhere did I see that you replaced the Cam Sensor. The EGR will cause it to stall at stops but usually will not prevent it from restarting. I would try replacing the Cam Sensor before anything else. If you should need further assistance go to my website by clicking here: Auto Repair

I have an 89 G20 sports van with a 5.7 Fuel injected Changed the plugs recently....gaped them a .35...soon after the motor began skipping.....more of a hiccup at higher speeds and after it's warmed...

i know changing the plugs in a van can be hard, sometimes when you have hard too reach spots aplug can get bumped, or cracked damgeging the plug or resetting your gap too zero,if this just started after you changed plugs i would check here first.

1988 Chevy Van No Spark

Have you put a spark plug fire tester on the plug wire and verified there is no fire at the plugs or do you just figure because it is getting gas if must be an issue with the fire. I ask this because the age of the truck it may have a plugged converter or muffler on the truck and if one of them are plugged it won't allow the engine to pull the fuel into the cylinders and fire. You can remove the 02 sensor ahead of the cat and the truck will start if one of them is plugged up. The truck will not run well but it will start and run ruff. Hope this helps.
