Yes, if it has a bad headgasket, the thermostat will not make any difference. On top of that, it's a really hard one to change on that car.

Water boils into overflow

make sure the cooling fans on the rad are working, then you may need the thermostat changed as if its stuck closed the motor will overheat and boil over.you can also get a block check done which will check for combustion chamber gases which indicate either a bad headgasket or a head problem.these are popular for headgasket problems.

2000 grand am over heating and no heat

if the car is overheating then there is air in the system causing the no heat problem.the overheating problem could be caused by the cooling fan not working at the radiator,or you have a bad thermostat or you have a headgasket problem with the motor.make sure the cooling fan is working this is a common problem if its not working the the motor will usually have to be replaced.if the thermostat hasn`t been changed it could be sticking closed causing the overheat condition so it will have to be changed.if its not either of these then you will have to have a block test done to see if you have a bad headgasket.

defective thermostat, and if you put straight water in it will will evaporate faster than normal coolant. I would get a new thermostat, get a coolant flush and put the correct type of coolant in your car. I believe it is the orange kind for aluminum engines.

Check to see if fluid is flowing in the coolant system. if no flow suspect water pump
