The power steering belt is on the front of the motor and is driven by the crankshaft. Below the steering pump is an adjuster bolt. It moves a pulley underneath the pump. To adjust the belt tension located the nut that tightens the adjuster pulley the the pump bracket . It is on the right side of the bracket , the pulley is on the left facing the back of the car. Loosen the pulley mount nut . You can now turn the adjuster bolt to move the pulley to tighten and loosen the belt for replacement. I recommend replacing the alternator belt at the same time. To do this , Unhook the negative battery cable, loosen the bolt holding block to the slide arm, reach under the alternator and loosen the lower mount bolt, not you can adjust the position of the alternator using the adjuster bolt.

I recommend replacing the alternator belt at the same time. To do this , unhook the negative battery cable, loosen the bolt holding block to the adjuster bolt slide arm, reach under the alternator and loosen the lower mount bolt, now you can adjust the position of the alternator using the adjuster bolt on the top. The reason you unhook the negative battery cable is because if you short the back of the alternator to the frame you will burn out a $20 dealer only fuse located on the positive battery terminal.

Check your engine belts to see if they are loose or need replaced. You could have a pulley or tensioner locking up. get that looked at asap, the belt will eventually come off and leave you stranded.

My galant's power steering only works at higher rpm

sounds like the pump is going out, check fluid, check belt, usually when u have to run at high rpm like that sounds like the pump is weak, higher rpms turns pump faster making fluid run through quicker, slower rpm fluid not pumping enough fluid to keep pump working, i believe you need power steering pump, if it goes ot while driving, it would be like driving a car from the 40 or 50s. hard to turn, you may even cause a wreck, you could get hurt or somebody else

Power steering

Do you know enough about your engine to be able to tell me if it looks like the power steering belt is separate from other belts or is it part of the main serpentine belt? If it's not the belt, check the power steering fluid. Look for red colored fluid, or sometimes clear colored fluid leaks under the car. It could be a blown hose, loose fitting leak, bad PS pump, or a missing belt. Please let me know what you find. Thanks.
