If you will visit a dealer, for a check and advice only, is going to cost you $65 to $100, and you will get the diagnostic code, and the code explanation.
If you take your car to AutoZone, is going to cost you $0.0 (free), and you will get the diagnostic code, and the code explanation print out, FOR FREE.
Keep in mind that, Car dealers have very sophisticated diagnostic systems, and can solve very complicated problems, but visiting first AutoZone isn't going to hurt you. Hope this will help.

I have 115,000 miles on my car and it runs great. Do I need to worry about the timing chain/belt replacement?

If it has a timing belt, the belt should have been replace at around 80,000 miles. So you are running on borrowed time.
If it has a chain, the chain and gears are designed to last the life of the engine, or around 200,000 miles.

I could start engine but it sounds like hammers banging on it. i don't have a code scanner.

Broken conrod or the timing belt has jumped a tooth or two. Check the timing marks are correct on the belt. If they are good may have to drop sump to check the bottom end.

When do I replace timing belt on 2008 Audi A4 (2.0) ? Dealer says 75,000 miles Manual says 110,000 miles current milage is 74,400 Thanks for your guidance. Paul Worley

The manual states the maximum, I always try to replace them around 90 thousand
miles. On some engines, the valves and pistons are an interference setup and if the
timing belt jumps time or breaks ,then the cylinders strike the valves ,requiring
remanufacturing of the head.

We purchased a used 2001 caravan sport. The owner had died and her children were not able to produce records.. 124,000 HOW can we tell if the timing belt has been changed and how often for oil changes?

The cam belt should be replaced every 120,00 miles. You will have to remove the cover and inspect the belt, to see if it has been replaced and even then it may be difficult to tell. The water pump should have also been replaced at the same time as it is driven by the cam belt and it is easy to see if it is new. Replacing the belt at the same time saves on labor costs later on when the pump will fail before the next cam belt replacement. At the same time you change the cam belt replace the coolant and replace the thermostat. Know that this is an interference engine and as such if the belt breaks you will have serious internal engine damage. If you have any doubt as to if the belt has been replaced or not, then replace it. I would suspect it has not been replaced due to the mileage. Do not drive this vehicle until you know one way or another. I cannot warn you enough on this. If the belt breaks you will spend lots of money to repair it. So do not take a chance. Change the oil/filter every 5,000 miles if you use conventional oil and drive normally. Every 7,500 miles if you use synthetic oil. If you drive all city then change it every 4,000 miles or 6,000 if you use synthetic. Use a quality filter such as Purolator, Wix, or Bosch. Avoid Fram. Change the air filter every 30,000 miles and also change the fuel filter every 50,000 miles. A partially clogged fuel filter can burn out a fuel pump, so change it now unless it appears it has been changed recently. Also have the transmission fluid changed at this time a s preventive measure. Make sure they use the correct A/T fluid as listed in your owner's manual. You do not know the history of the vehicle you must assume none of this has been done.

Does the timing belt need replaced at a certain milage?

yes it does, you should ideally replace every 70,000 miles as the longer you leave it the more wear occurs and one day it will snap and thats your engine creamed!

Check engine light is on, Car stumbled when doing about 65-68. It also has been hard to start at times 124,000 miles 2005 2.5

There are many sensors in the engine that will make the engine light come ON and cause this problem. Not to mention the big list of trouble codes for the engine light.

Best way to find out what's going on is to have an auto-parts store hook up a engine light code reader and tell you what the trouble code is and what it means. Most auto-part store will do this for free.

I have a 2004 hyundai santa fe with 90000 miles. The timing belt has never been changed. How often should it be changed

It needs to be replaced ASAP> This vehicle has an interference engine which means that if the belt breaks the engine will need to be rebuilt/replaced due to the valves making contact with the piston and bending them. The belt should be inspected around every 10k miles, but should be seriously looked into being replaced at least around 80k miles. Also have them check the pulleys and the tensioner. If these are weak and worn out they should be replaced as well, so that you don't have any problems for some time.

92 toyota celica cranks does'nt start no spark at plugs 124,000 miles

SOunds like the timing belt has broke. To check you can take off distributor cap and turn over engine and see if the rotor turns. If not you have a busted timing belt. Please rate this a fixya if this helps. Thanks!!!

My volvo has 150000 miles when is time to change timming belt

Timing belt
For proper functioning of the engine and its emission control systems, the timing belt and belt tensioner must be replaced every 105,000 miles (168,000 km) or at 120,000 miles (193,000 km) for the 2.5T engine on AWD models. Engine damage will occur if the belt fails.

The car hasnt died yet? thats lucky

"engine damage" is a euphemism for, the camshaft will stop as soon as the belt breaks, jamming at least one valve open, the valve head will smash through the piston crown on the next piston upstroke, and large fragments of hardened steel will rattle around in the engine chewing up everything they meet untill the engine seizes
time taken ~3 seconds.

probably a good time replace it, its due to fail now even if the 105K is a conservative fail safe number
