Why would my OBD or malfunction indicator light come on and stay on?

Check engine light comes on with faulty oxygen sensor, loose gas cap or faulty gas cap. sometimes with low octane fuel as well. fill up with high octane fuel, tighten down the cap and see if it helps.

How long can you safely drive the car when the "check engine" light is on. My gas cap was loose and I tightened it but don't know how long it will take for the light to go out.

It may take 40 or 50 cycles of turning the car on and off to clear the code. Or, use a scan tool to clear the code after tightening the loose gas cap.

If the code doesn't go away, on the next start, then there may be another leak in the gas tank or filler neck areas that simulates a loose gasoline cap.

Good luck on getting the check engine light to go out.

I have a 2000 dodge dakota quad cab (4.7L / V*). My check engine light kept coming on after tightening the loose gas cap. I purchases a new gas cap specifically for my truck and the light came on again...

Check that there are no other leaks in the gas filler neck or gas tank itself that would cause the gas cap error to cause the check engine light to go on.

A lack of pressure in the tank can cause the check engine light to go on, erroneously signalling that the gas cap is loose or missing.

Good luck on this repair.

Check Gas Cap alarm comes on and engine light is on

You gas cap is not on tight enough to seal causing the Check Engine Light to come on. When you tighten your gas cap you need to tighten it until it clicks at least 5 times, if it is tight than the seal on the gas cap may be bad. Replace with a OEM GM gas cap or a quality replacement that meets OEM specs.

Check engine light came on after filling the car with gas, after going from shreveport la. to dallas tx.after tightening the gas cap it went off what should I do?

A loose gas cap will cause the check engine light to come on as it is part of the evap system. Tightening the cap is the solution, which you did.

Everything is fine...now worries.

Engine light came on, gas cap was loose

Probably nothing wrong if the gas cap was loose. Sometimes it takes an odd combination of driving modes to reset the monitor. Toyota seems to have an especially fussy drive cycle for the evap system which includes the gas cap. Just keep driving it, it should go out soon.

On a 2006 chevy impala it tells you to tighten the gas cap ,then when you do, we shut the car off. Then check engine light comes on. Where is the sensor located.

There is no sensor for a loose gas cap. What is happening is that the evaporative emission system is sensing a "Large Leak". Usually code p0455. The computer sees this as the most probable cause is a loose gas cap depending on several factors it looks at. You would need to clear the code(s) and see if that was the problem. If the light comes back on, then you have a problem in the system that will not let it seal. Possible solenoid problem, leaking hose / line, etc.
