How do I change the windshield wiper switch? I have obtained a used switch, but it came attached to a used steering wheel column. I need to know how to get the switches off the steering columns, and how to get the "new" one on.

Dash Mounted Switches

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Unfasten the screw from the instrument panel, under the switch.
  3. Remove the assembly by carefully pulling the switch out to release the two spring clips at the top.
To install:
  1. Carefully push the switch into place, making sure the spring clips line up with the holes and the connector attaches securely.
  2. Install the retaining screw and tighten to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.

Column Mounted Switches
The wiper switch is located inside the steering column. To gain access to the switch, the steering wheel, multi-function (turn signal) and ignition lock will have to be removed; check the next lines.

The wiper switch is controlled by the multi-function turn signal lever but the actual switch is located in the steering column.

WARNING On vehicles with air bags, disable the SIR system. The vehicles wheels must be in the straight ahead position and the key must be in the LOCK position when removing or installing the steering column. Failure to do so may cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered and may result in otherwise unneeded SIR repairs.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If equipped, properly disable the SIR system, as outlined in Chassis Electrical of the repair guide.
  3. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this information.
  4. Remove the turn signal canceling cam assembly.
  5. Remove the hazard knob and position the turn signal lever so the housing cover screw can be removed through the opening in the switch. Remove the housing cover.
  6. Remove the wire protector from the opening in the instrument panel bracket and separate the wires.
  7. Detach the pivot and pulse switch connector. Remove the pivot switch connector and pivot switch.
To install:
  1. Install the pivot and pulse switch assembly. Install the wiring protector around the instrument panel opening, covering all wires.
  2. Install the steering column housing cover and tighten the screws to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  3. Install the hazard knob and lubricate the bottom side of the canceling cam with lithium grease.
  4. Install the steering wheel, as outlined earlier in this information.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. If equipped, properly enable the SIR system, as outlined in Chassis Electrical of the repair guide.
  7. Check steering column operations.

Hope helps.

1986 volkswagen windshield wipers will not turn off?

look for signs of a windshield leaking water into fuse/relay box- located near pedals under dash. Also remove small plastic trim below steering wheel ( 2 screws) and unplug black connector with 6 or 8 wires directly under steering column. Turn key on if wipers are stopped then your switch is bad- steering wheel must be removed to change switch.

The turn signal switch or in Ford terms "multi-function" switch is easy to replace if you are mechanically inclined. Lower the steering column "tilt" adjustment for easier access. Remove the lower panel (below the steering column). Remove the three screws from the plastic column covers that surround the multi-function switch. Turn the key to the run position, then from the bottom side of the column, use a very small pocket screwdriver, allen wrench or similiar tool to push up on the ignition cylinder release pin. The hole is located just below the cylinder. With the pin pushed, pull out on the key and cylinder. Next seperate the two cover halves and you will see the complete multi-function switch. remove the two attaching screws, remove the electrical connectors and replace the switch. Replace all removed components and you're done! You can purchase the switch at most auto parts stores, ford dealers or ebay. Feel free to ask if more information is needed and I appreciate a vote of four thumbs up. Good luck!

The windshield wiper switch on my 2001 lumina needs to be replaced and I am thinking of doing it myself. How hard is it to do this? Is it true that I would need to take the steering wheel off?

No , the steering wheel doesn't need to be pulled off . The wiper switch just pulls out of the steering column .

Verify that the lever (2) is in the center of the OFF position.
Disconnect the electrical connection (3) behind the lever (2).
Remove the switch lever (2) by pulling straightly outward on the lever .

Windshield wipers will not shut off?

I replaced the Power fuse/relay located under the steering wheel dash. Its a gray canister and only costs $3.00. That seemed to repair the windshield wiper and powerlockes and powerseat. The resone that the ruse/relay went out in the first place was because the power seat switches were touching the frame of the chair. All i did to fix that was to use electrical tape on the frame and around the switch assembly.

Windshield wipers don't work

Ok, this is a steering column issue. The wiring needs to be replaced. Shouldn't cost much at all. also, the external switch may have issues as well but, i suggest you re wire your steering column to fix this problem.

How do you change turn signal switch on 1993 Mercury Marquis?

This is a Problem with the Switch Housing inside the Steering Column. You will need to Pull the Steering wheel and a Few other Components to get to this. Usually better left to Pro to Repair as it is Pretty Labor Intensive.
