What does the 2 arows named "A" means ?

Hi Sam, the A-A is showing a side view of the thermostat off to the right. This was the designer's way of showing you that the thermostat center plate dips down into the outlet pipe. Another way of stating this is that the copper plug with the spring around it goes into the engine. You must have the correct end in the engine for the thermostat to operate.

Ok realised it after dismantling it. There is a clip in middle to hold the head in place while installing back. After changing thermostat, gasket it keeps leaking. Installed a gasket betwen the elbow and engine block still leaking so I solved the problem by putting black driveway tar all around. Extreme measure but for a car of 243000 km it will be the lat thermostat.

I do not know where the '98 Cavalier 2.2 L engine thermostat is

Open the hood and trace the upper radiator rubber hose to where it ends. That is where you should find the thermostat. If it is not there, it is apparent that the previous owner could have removed it for some reasons.
Notice how the thermostat was previously installed, and use that as a guide when you replace it back.

Cavalier blowing out black smoke car idles fairly well considerin

Black smoke is usually unburned fuel. P0171 reads bank 1 system too lean. There isn't one answer. You need to dig further and inspect your cars fuel system, from the pump to the injectors. Because of the mileage you may want to start off with a compression test just to see where you stand with the motor. write back if you have any other questions.
