1996 cherekee 4lt cold starting idles good warms up idles rough. exhaust fums stink. fueling up spark plugs .speedo289000klm'can any one help

is the problem only on a cold engine, hot or both?
is the hot engine reaching and holding 180F or more as it must?>
its running rich
and that is misfire.
lots of causes for rich. the tests are easy in shop with tools.
  1. a full tuneup.
  2. fuel pressure to high we, use a gauge. (FPR bad?)
  3. leaking injectors.
  4. ECT failure, scan it and must read 180f, hot, if at 180f hot.?
  5. this takes 5 min work on any scan tool (real)
  6. map hose clogged. or leaking. the Map sensor must not be blocked in any way to the plenum vacuum. or it will lie and it will run real bad.
  7. on a hot engine, the 02 sensors can fail, or is good and the exhaust cracks in the header do that. on mine it did 3 times.
cracks in the exh header, there must not he any leaks in that header (or bad gaskets)
or the 02 lies. , goes to 0volts and then engine runs rich as a piggy. (my scan tool shows this is seconds, 02 flat-lined at 0v.
all cars, with 02 do that. with that issue.
02 means oxygen sensor, the front one, not the rear one.

My car runs really rough and sounds loud when it is below 50 degrees outside, even after it warms up. Could it be an O2 sensor?

Could be an ECT engine coolant temp sensor or an O2 that are faulty. If you do not have access to a scan tool, have someone like a parts place scan it and read the ECT and O2's while it is running .

2.3l 2001 ford ranger rough idle and running rich and misfiring with p0301 code

You have to correct the cylinder misfires first

You may have vacuum leaks somewhere in the
intake or exhaust

You really need to look at data with a scan tool

You start with Mode $06 & cylinder misfire count ,if that
even works well on your motor

Then you look at fuel trim & add short & long together,
to get an idea if it is running rich, which would be a lean
condition from a vacuum leak or rich from leaking injectors

All the data is only good if you haven't cleared it or disconnected
the battery. If you did, then you have to drive until all I/M Monitors
run & then look at data

You look at O2 sensor data & even scope them

You made no mention of checking for codes
No mention of a cylinder leak down test for valve leaks
Exhaust Converter age or condition !
Fuel Pressure !

1999 saturn running rich sohc 1.9l down stream o2 sensor staying above .50v most of the time is around .72v at idle. compression 110. changed all engine sensors at least once. injectors once fuel filter...

the sensor that controls the mixture is the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) in the exhaust manifold
compression is low as it should be no less that 125 psi that is if the readings were taken with the throttle wide open
the noise in the exhaust indicates unburnt mixture accumulating in the muffler to flash off
check for a crack in the flex section of the exhaust near the manifold

96 Chrysler concorde 3.5L, I have consistantly pull the gas after start or it won't stay started. As is the pcm forgot the idle. Once its warmed up it will have a rough idle and eventualy die. What...

I have a 1996 LHS, same 3.5L engine, loved the riding and smoothness when i bought it 2 years ago..... F@#$%ng money pit, a POS scam artist of a mechanic charged me 4200 for new front end suspension a year ago which is already shot again, after that i insisted on doing everything on this car myself. As i have no professional training nor do i have a stocked garage this goes without saying is a daunting task.I recommend buying or borrowing(local library) a Chilton and/or Haynes manual. The Chrysler Concorde is the same car different body style as my LHS, a Piece of something.. I'm in the midst of learning about the idling, as i have an opposite problem with too high rpms.

So far, i've concluded that some sensors only malfunction during certain conditions, i.e. cooling temperature sensor that activates fans, also can cause rich or lean fuel/air mixtures. It sounds to me like something is inducing a rich fuel mixture(high rpms) and your PCM (LHS' under air filter compartment) is overcompensating and has stored into its memory leading to a lean running car. I know it doesn't answer your question but hopefully it'll spark an idea. when i figure it out exactly i'll let you know.

no
the next step is to have the fault codes read
indicates a problem idle sensor
running rich is heated oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold or problem dirty injectors causing a problem in the air /fuel mixture settings

Caravan runs very rough at start up when cold

have you installed new plugs lately,if so have someone check the Engine Coolant Switch,
this sensor tells the engine how cold it is so the computer knows what kind of fuel mixture it will need.
rich or lean
