With spark plugs removed then YES you should be able to turn engine over

Automatic transmission removal


Derrick, yes those bolts must be removed in order to separate the transmission from the flywheel. You can turn the motor clockwise from the bolt that holds in the harmonic balancer in the front of the motor. Use a prybar or flywheel tool, if needed, to hold the flywheel stationary while removing the bolts with a wrench. Careful not to damage teeth on flywheel...DW

When i try to start my car the starter just rapidly ticks. i took the starter in and its fine so i tried to turn the crank pully and the flywheel but neither of them will move.


If they will not turn in either direction, your engine is seized.
If it turns in one direction then stops you have an obstruction either inside the engine (catastrophic) or between the engine and transmission (such as loose flywheel bolts) stopping the engine from turning.

Nissan frontier starter binds the flywheel


You need to put shims in between the starter and the engine block.You should be able to pick them up at your local auto parts store.

Torque converter ta


Torque converter is located in the bell houseing of the gear box (Automatic) You need to remove the inspection cover from the bottom of the bell houseing & it has several bolts attaching it to the flywheel (ring gear) of the engine. You will need to turn the motor by hand to get all those bolts. Then you have to remove the whole gearbox. then you can remove the converter from the bell houseing. MAKE SURE IGNITION IS OFF WHEN TURNING MOTOR BY HAND

I AM TRYING TO REPLACE MY STARTER ON A 1997 CHEV LUMINA 3.1 V6. I NEED A DIAGRAM OF THE STARTER


Hello Larry...Here are the steps to take. Detach the ground (black) battery cable. Lift the front of your vehicle with a floor jack, support it with jack stands and chock the rear wheels.
Unfasten the retaining nuts holding the heavy (battery) cable and the thin wire to the back of the starter solenoid (the small cylinder mounted on top of the starter motor) with a wrench. Move the heavy and thin wires out of the way.
Loosen the two mounting bolts holding the starter motor to the engine block with a ratchet, large ratchet extension and socket. Hold the motor assembly with one hand and finish removing the two starter mounting bolts. Make a note of the position of each mounting bolt, since they are of different sizes, and of any shims located between the starter motor, mounting bolts and engine block.
Remove the starter motor from the vehicle

To Install:
Position the new starter motor in place with one hand and install the two mounting bolts finger tight with your free hand, along with any shims installed with the original starter. Failing to replace the shims may cause the starter to grind against the flywheel or engage and fail to start the engine

Tighten the two mounting bolts with the ratchet, extension & socket.
Install the heavy cable and wire in their respective mounting studs at the back of the starter solenoid and install the retaining nuts finger tight. Tighten the nuts with the wrench; (careful not to overtighten)
Lower your vehicle off the jack stands...Attach the ground (black) battery cable.

How do you remove the top bolt on the starter, 3.0l auto 1995 bmw 525i? i can't get to it. thanks


This how it is done step by step.
Remove the mounting bolts from the coolant expansion tank and lift the expansion tank out of the engine compartment. Tip: Do not disconnect the hoses from the coolant expansion tank. Label and disconnect the electrical connectors from the starter motor. Remove the mounting nuts from the starter motor and lift the starter motor off the bellhousing. Using a flashlight, inspect the flywheel teeth (through the opening in the bell housing) while an assistant turns the engine over by hand. You should replace the flywheel if any teeth are missing, cracked, or chipped. Tip: To turn the engine over by hand, turn the harmonic balancer bolt clockwise with the correct socket and 1/2 inch ratchet. Install the new starter motor on the bellhousing and tighten the mounting nuts. Connect the electrical connectors to the starter motor. Re-install the expansion tank and tighten the mounting bolts. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Cannot remove transmission


Did you remove the torque converter bolt's from the fly wheel, should be 4. You will have to turn the motor by hand to remove all the bolt's.

Acess to fly wheel bolts


If you cannot turn the engine to get access to the bolts, you will have to remove the converter with the engine as an assembly. It will get messy with trans oil.

Starter energizes, but won't kick motor over. Bad grinding sound


To make the whole process easier on you pull all 4 spark plugs, this will make the engine easier to turn by hand. I'm not sure which size crank bolt they had on that engine, it's either 17mm, or 19mm, I think it's 17. Anyway see if, with a breaker bar and previously mentioned socket, see if you can turn the engine by hand. If you can, the vehicle probably has a flywheel issue, If it won't turn by hand the engine has internal issues and that's what burned the original starter up.

1983 monte carlo new starter cant turn flywheel i hear it an see it engage it but cant crank it over


try turning the engine by hand. to do this use a socket and ratchet on the big bolt on the bottom center pulley at the front of the motor, if you can turn the engine then you need to shim the starter.
