Question about 1983 Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

Gas will not flow easily (sometimes hardly at all) into my 1983 Toyota pickup. Is the line clogged? Is there a seperate connection that allows air to escape during filling which could be clogged?

Sharky.....I feel that I may have confused you with my original post. My problem is not between the fuel tank and the engine (which runs great). The problem is when I am trying to fill the tank at the gas station. The pump clicks off very easily and sometimes gas will spill out onto the pavement. This will happen despite the tank being close to empty. It seems like an airflow problem and therefore I am suspecting a clog somewhere. Thank you for your input thus far.

Check your fuel pump pressure and I'm sure you changed your fuel filter. Blow compressed air back through fuel line as it may be something floating in tank. Does flow change when gas cap is off? Is this 20 or 22R motor?

This is a 22R motor. And, no, I have not changed the fuel filter. For some reason I thougth that would be located between the engine and the gas tank, not the gas tank and the fuel nozzle. I will look into the fuel pump pressure. Is there any risk in blowing compressed air into the fuel line?

the fuel filter should be in between fuel tank and fuel pump (I assume mechanical pump attached to block). No flames or sparks, no fire risk on the air compressor to clear lines(remove cap on tank). Check for weak fuel pressure of mechanical fuel pump, should be around 8-12 pounds. Cap off eliminates possible vacuum lock in fuel line if vent line is clogged. Feel free to continue this feed, I've owned/ worked on many a toyota vehicle...MK

OK wave maker! ( funny, I used to build surfboards decades ago) Whole different conversation now! I'm sorry! I think someone may have installed one of those anti-steal-my-gas springs in the fill tube of your tank and possibly more debris; try and push something thru like..ahhh.. flexible electrical conduit to clear the line of obstruction. If there is a rubber section of hose connecting fill tube to tank, remove it and check/clear. Worst case senario- drop tank down a little

Have your pickup unit inside fuel tank checked. Sometimes the rubber lines that connects the fuel pump to pickup tube deteriorates. When fuel level gets below the connection, the system will draw air in and the sputtering will occur. Also check the charcoal cannister and return lines for clogging.

is your engine turbo charged? if so go for turbo charger or the waste gate valve not working and do not allow the engine emission to flow easily. also for the black smoke sometimes you might have a clogged air filter, tight engine valves( if are adjustable ).

1991 toyota pickup dies when you release the gas pedal

There are couple of things I would check out that would cause this problem.

1. The Mass Air Flow Sensor. It measures how much air is going into the engine. Should be located on top of air filter box.

2. The air tube that goes from the Mass Air Flow Sensor to the throttle body. Check for leaks that would bypass air from going through the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

3. The Throttle Position Sensor. Located on the throttle body. This tells the computer what position the butterfly plate is on the throttle body. You control this plate with the gas pedal..

Fuel delivery problem

There usually is a strainer in the gas tank. After 23 years, anything is possible. If you have a carburetor, replace it, or have it cleaned. If fuel injected, the big hose from the air filter could be damaged and shifting loose. If the engine doesn't see the right vacuum, it won't work right. Check all the little vacuum lines. Get a vacuum gauge, learn how to use it. Do a fuel flow test to see if your tank is clogged.

Clogged fuel line... maybe fuel filter clogged. Air compressor can clear line. Blow out the line coming in to the carb from the tank.
