Sounds like a bad starter possibly getting non functional with heated up condition.

The solution is to change the starter with a new one, hopefully lifetime warranted if that's available.

Where is theEMC on a 87 ltd 302 fi crown vic and what happens when it goes bad?

The ECM is located under the dashboard.
Try this before you replace the ECM change the pick up coil in the distributor the symptoms you are having usually happens when the pick up coil get hot and is defective. Here's how disconnect the battery, remove the distributor cap and you will see a disc like object below the rotor. It may have two or three screws holding it in place remove them and then remove the pick up cool. They start at $24.99

1987 crwn vic 5.0 l, 302, Engine runs for 5-10 minutes and shut down. Cranks but will not restart. After 12-24 hrs car will start again and run for 5-10 minutes and process repeats. When the car shuts off...

this is tough, two things I can think of, the first is the coil, if it is not ground good there wont be a good spark or a defective coil,,,, but i am leaning more to it being the timing chain jumped a cog,,, the computer would start the engine advansed but as the engine warmed it would ****** the spark ,,, after 5-10 min. it would quit,, this I would if it si a higher milage car. 1987 Ford Crown Victoria LTD

If it was an old police vehicle it has probably got an ignition kill switch located somewhere. This will have to be removed. And the wiring put back to factory standards. If not an old police car you are not getting voltage to the starter which is a bad relay. Do you get a clicking sound when you try to start? If yes, have someone keep hitting the start and listen and look for a relay under the hood.
