Question about 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I added freon with dye and noticed it splattered or leaked all over the compressor, is the compressor bad?

Check for cracks or splits on the lines.If the line is o.k. check for worn gaskets.Remember the lines are under high pressure.Make sure the system isn't clogged.If thats not the problem,then replace the compressor.

Good Evening, the air compressors are pretty good about leaking behind the clutch or where they go together. As long as your manifold lines going into the compressor are not leaking at their gaskets , then I would tell you that if the dye is all over the compressor and you did not spill it, there is only one way it would get out of the system. I would agree to say given the circumstance that it is bad.

My air conditioner works but does not cool . i have added freon the last two years and fixed the problem ,did the same thing this year but did not help .


When self adding freon after it leaks out you get air trapped in the system. After adding freon a couple of times the air expands not leaving room for the needed freon. To continue adding freon with air tapped will knock the compressor out pretty quickly, there's not enough room for both & the air is keeping the freon from being able to cool properly give the false indication of being low on freon. The freon you are adding has the dye added to assist in finding the leak since freon does not evaporate nor dissipate it its being leaked out. A black light will assist locating the leak. The best thing is to have the unit checked & serviced by a mechanic...he'll charge about $ 150.00 to check for leaks, remove the old freon...his machine will tell him how much air its trapped in the system by how little freon is removed. For the service fee he will replace valves & gaskets, where needed, correcting most leaks. After sucking the system down & recharging the problem should be corrected.

My Chrysler 1994 ac compresspor engages then dissengages. stays on for about 5 seconds it just was replaced 2010. and it sat for a year maby low freon how do i tell.


it actually may be low on freon, your best bet is to do a evac and refill with dye and sealer so you get all moisture out of your system.

Added freon to ac and car will not cool


Needs to be checked for a freon leak, best way to do this is to recharge and add dye, with a uv light you will be able to fine the leak, most auto parts sell the dye, and the flash light you will need to fine the leak, good luck.

A/C COMPRESSOR WONT ENGAGE. NEW A/C COMPRESSOR INSTALLED . Checked fuse panel, fuse OK.


Diod you charge the a/c, if its low, by that I mean if it needs a charge the compressor has a cut out switch inline with the power wire going to the a/c compressor clutch(it can also be referred to as a fuse depending on who you arer speaking with), it is there to protect the compressor from burning out.
You see if the a/c system has a leak....any air conditioning system not just a car.... along with the freon leaking out a/c compressor oil can also leak out with it especially if its on the high side lines or the compressor front shaft seal(which is behind the a/c clutch). That is why it is equally important to buy a 1 pound can of freon + oil combo and a freon 1 pound can with leak dye combo in it, if its down a little in other words the compressor turns on but isn't real cold then only install the freon + leak dye as the leak dye will travel through the system and expose its colors when it appears at the site of the leak, giving you a visual on where the leak is.
try adding some freon to the "low" pressure side of the suction lines of the compressor(larger lines with a larger fill port, be certain to purchase the proper fill hose and attachment needed for your particular car.
The auto parts store will assist you in this proceedure.
Once
You may have to locate the a/c compressor cut out I think its a threaded one that has a black electrical connector on top, remove the connector and jump the wires together to get the compressor to turn, then add the freon. Walla, the compressor is working and accepting the charge, if by jumping out the low pressure cut out switch no sound is even heard at the clutch you may have to replace the low switch as well.
This test also tells you if the a/c compressor and clutch are working properly, if you jump it out and it doesnt engage replace the clutch. You will need a puller, Auto Zone will lend you the tools for the job free if you buy the parts from them,cool aye?

Normally due to low freon. Also, notice if the a/c compressor clutch engages, as it will not if the freon is low.

Does 1998 tahoe with rear a/c have two expansion valves? I installed a new compressor, rear expansion valve, orifice tube, evaporator and vaccumed the system, and added about 3 cans 134a. rear air 39...


try adding freon with a dye in it, sounds you have a leak,pay special attention to the a/c lines that run under the truck. notorious for having pin hole leaks,check these and get back to me we'll go from there. hope this helps get back to me Thanks Ray

Ac not working right


If the system was workin enough for you to add freon and stop leak you may have overcharged the system and blew out the location of the leak to make it lose enough charge that it shut down from being low on charge. There is a low pressure switch that will stop the clutch on the compressor from engaging when low on charge. The hose connections have O-rings and the system needs to be discharged and the Freon captured to replace the O-rings. ALL O-rings should be replaced at once if that is the case. Look to see where the red dye showed up if you put in the stop leak. Normally the seal in the compressor is what starts leaking first. It sounds like your leak is bad enough that stop leak will not be the answer so you may have to break down and take it to a shop to check the system.

Its a leak ...probably concealed like in an evap housing or rear air unit and lines (if it has that). Prob at this juncture I would remove all the freon and bring system into a vaccuum with a pump and see if it will hold vaccum for an extended period of time. A bad leak will not hold srong vacuum very long and much cheaper than wasting expensive and enviromental un0friendly refrigerants.
