You repair both at the same time to equalize the performance. Also if the piston rings are fairly worn and the heads are the only parts that is done you may blow out the rings as well. Do a compression check before you tear it down to see what the pressure is in each piston

Make sure that your cooling system isn't clogged.Did you over heat the engine too much?Chances are they need to be taken to a machine shop to have the heads machined. This means they will smooth out the surface, replace any bearings and new valve springs and possibly valves. Also when you replace the heads, you should use new head bolts because the the old ones stretch. Those intake gaskets also have a habit of leaking as well.

Are lifters a common problem on chevy malibu 3100

That depends on when was the last time the car was serviced and how many miles its done since the last service.

If its a high milage car then having the valves set should clear up the misfire and the lifter tick.

My 2002 Chevy Malibu is making the turn signal sound when the turn signals are not turned on. It also is intermittently accompanied by a bell as if a door is ajar. What needs to be done to fix this?

For the first part next time it is doing it try messing with the hazard button on the dash, the noise will stop or go away for a while if that's your problem.
As for the bell it would be something differant than the hazard switch. Is any of the Idiot lights coming on when it does it?

Leaking fluid in my 1999 Chevy Malibu

When they changed the water pump and the leak stopped then the water pump was bad. If they changed the water pump and was still leaking then then it was not the water pump.
Where is the fluid leaking from, if there is white smoke coming from the tail pipe then good chance is that the head gasket is gone and pull the dip stick out to see if there is antifreeze mixxing with the engine oil.
It's common that the 3.4 V6 has intake manifold gasket go bad and leak. Check all the heater hose first, and try to find out where the leak is coming from.
Good luck and keep me posted, glad to help you as much as i can.
