Question about 1996 Dodge Caravan

2 Answers

1996 caravan, will now fire but runs rough, almost like it's out of time. I've seen something about a cam sensor could it be that or am I still looking at replacing the pcm? would rather not replace that due to the expense. Any help is appreciated.

ok, I'll start from the begining. I was driving the van, it suddenly started to chug and lost power, then totally died, all in a matter of about 5 seconds. wouldn't restart so I checked for spark, no spark, checked to see if it was getting power to the coil pack, it was, changed out the pack, now it will try and start, but backfires/misses like it's out of time. from what I've read on this site it's gotten kind of narrowed down to those 2 things. However, I've checked the fault codes and nothing shows up except radiator fan relay fault, which was a blown fuse. So, I am at a loss as to what it is, that's why I came here to ask for help.

As much as I would like to see you do all your own work
I do not want you to get in the habit of replacing parts, until you understand what they are there for,how they work within a system and most important, you never replace a part until you know how to test it ,and it fails a test. Common sense.
No one can tell you what to do over the internet or phone, need the vehicle.

That said, look for vacuum leaks, hose, etc. Do the easy things first

You asked for help. Where is the problems you have been having?
What caused it not to fire? Need some history here.

Why is a cam sensor in this. If don't know how to test it or the PCM, then you don't get that involved.

Running rough-1987 Ford Ranger 2.3 L 4 cyl. Had been running very smoothly until 2 weeks ago when it began backfiring and running rough, especially at low speeds, without my having made any adjustmen

If your car has a mas air flow sensor (usualy located right aroung air filter or in air passage after the air filter) check and clean the sensor. This looks like a small spring on the end of 2 wires. BE CAREFUL not to damage the sensor. I have seen where the sensor gets dirty over time and this can cause a rough idle.

1996 dodge grand caravan 3.3 will turn over but will not crank seems to be no fire to the plugs

It is hard to say with the info posted, it could be related to a number of issues. If you have verified that there is no spark to the spark plugs, it could be the CPS (crankshaft position sensor)

1996 Chrysler LHS not firing

First, check the ECM fuse in the power control module (it will be a yellow 20 amp fuse). Second, check the timing belt. You can pull out the cam sensor and look in the hole while someone cranks the motor. If the cam gear is not turning, the timing belt is broken. VERY IMPORTANT - when replacing the cam sensor, get a special adhesive pad from a Chrysler dealer that attaches to the bottom of the sensor to set the proper gap (cost about $2). Install the cam sensor until the pad touches the gear and tighten down the locking bolt. The pad will wear off in normal running. If the gap is not set correctly using this gapping pad, you won't start.
